Cornelius John McKenna
« on: Sunday 05 March 06 22:40 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for a Cornelius John McKenna (or M'Kenna) who eloped with Annie Ellen Rowland in 1881.  He was a Surgeon Lt. Colonel in the Bengal Medical Establishment when he met her, and she was married to the Reverend William Rowland.  They married in London in 1883 (after the Rowland divorce) and after that I have lost track of them.  He was born in Ireland, I think, so I wondered if they might have gone back there.  Does anyone have any idea how I could find out where they went and whether they had any children?
I have not done any research in Ireland before.

Hiya Balfour,

If the christian name Cornelius ran in the family you may be lucky. There were two possible contenders in Ireland with the name Cornelius McKenna at the time of Griffith's Valuation of Ireland. One may have been the father or other relative of the Surgeon Lt. Colonel. I think his rank, the fact he married the wife of a member of the clergy and there was money for a divorce means you should be looking for a McKenna with at least a small sized estate

Cornelius Mc Kenna, Ballyknock, Killelagh, Derry (Valuation took place 1858-9)
Cornelius Mc Kenna, Curran, Tullyniskan, Tyrone (Valuation took place 1861)

The surname appeared in a large number of counties in Ireland so I've just listed the ones where it appeared in the greatest numbers ... Armagh  123, Derry  215, Louth  128, Monaghan  758, Tyrone  366

Dear Christopher

Thank you very much for writing to me about Cornelius.  It gave me quite a shock because I have just come back from seeing Sydney Rowland's grave (his wife's son from her first marriage) in France and had been thinking about Cornelius McKenna for the first time in months and then found your message!  Isn't it strange how often that happens?

Anyway, you have given me some leads.  Thanks so much for your help.

Hello Angie,

Was Sydney Rowland a brother of Cecil Rowland?
