VINCENT FAMILY - Curry Mallet
« on: Thursday 21 February 08 16:47 GMT (UK) »

I have a copy of my gran's Marriage Certificate dated 8 January 1915 to Henry James Vincent (he is named as Harry, though not his real name). Henry's father is named as William Vincent.
However, I have assumed (maybe wrongly) that this was an error on the part of the Registrar at the time. The reason being that I have a copy of a Birth Certificate of Henry James Vincent born on 13 February 1872 to a Mary Ann and Henry James Vincent in Curry Mallet. Mary Ann (widow) later went on to marry a William Spiller on 25 March 1875.
Could the Registrar just simply have asked Henry his father's name and recorded it as William Vincent, William being his step-father's name and Vincent being Henry's surname? Henry was 20 years older than my gran, Gertrude Mary Spiller, when he married her. She once told my mum a lovely story- Henry had held her in his arms when she was a baby (she was also born in Curry Mallet) and said that one day he was going to marry her.
I hope that my assumption is correct, but I am hoping that one of you clever people out there can confirm one way or the other. I have found some records of William Vincents in Curry Mallet, though not sure if related to Henry.
Please help!!!!!!!

It would seem to me that as Henry James was born in 1872 and his mother remarried in 1875 that he knew little of his biological father Henry James,  William Spiller would have raised him so its quite likely that he said  William Vincent instead of Henry James.
