Hello! I am new to this site. I have read through a few posts, and it looks as if it is a very friendly place. I hope that someone can help me as I have seen others helped.
My grandmother Christina McPherson was born in Dalcottaig 10th November 1874. Her parents were Donald McPherson and Jane nee Richmond. I have stacks of information on Jane, but unfortunately, apart from being born c1835 in Kilmonivaig, can find nothing on Donald. They were married 21st June 1870, in Boleskine.
I believe he was a Gamekeeper, and the family were Roman Catholic.
I hope this will be sufficient information for someone to work on, as it really is all I have.
Living in hope
Wee Ann

Thank you - Thank you - Thank you!
I now have Donalds parents names, a much closer hint as to his year of birth, and the name of a sibling!
I have no doubts about the marriage certificate, Jane's mother is named as Mary McLachlan, whereas previously I had Mary McKeachen but I think I got this from I.G.I., so it could have been a mistranscription. The rest fits in beautifully with what I have.
Thank you again
Best regards to all
Ann

Hi Ann
I wonder if this is Donald at home in 1851. There are two Donalds showing as sons , you would have to look at the original to confirm:
Alexr McPherson 69, shepherd Murdoch McPherson 30, shepherd John McPherson 24, shepherd Catherine McPherson 22, servant Donald McPherson 20, shepherd Allan McPherson 18, shepherd Donald McPherson 16 Ann McPherson 14 Duncan McPherson 9
Address: Lochtreig, Kilmonivaig
Regards.

There were two sons called Donald reconfirming details with the family's 1841 Census entry. Mother Mary also shows in 1841. Youngest Donald who looks to be the right age to be your direct line shows as born outside the county:
MACPHERSON Alexander, 54, Agricultural Labourer MACPHERSON Mary, 40 MACPHERSON John, 15 MACPHERSON Donald, 10 MACPHERSON Alexander, 8 MACPHERSON Allan, 6 MACPHERSON Donald, 4 MACPHERSON Ann, 2
Address: Loch-Treig, Kilmonivaig

Hi Monica,
I am finding all this a bit overwhelming! After a total dearth of information for so long, to find all this out in one overnight period? WOW!!!
Was it usual for two living sons to be given the same name?
I loved the 'Ann'! I was named for my great aunt, Ann McPherson, who was obviously named for her Dad's wee sister! It makes the family ... Well! a family doesn't it? And I really am a part of it.
Thank you so much. (No! I'm not crying!)
Best regards
Ann
