Marriage look-up Compton please
« on: Friday 22 February 08 22:19 GMT (UK) »

I wonder if SKS could look up a marriage in the 1st quarter 1868 in Compton. It's between Frederick Brookman and Harriett Goodale. I'm interested to see the name of her father and if it mentions that he is deceased.

Thank You so much

Hi Lesley,

I've got the Compton PRs on CD (from Berks FHS). There are lots of Brookman entries - but no Frederick, I'm afraid. He doesn't appear to have been baptised there either, nor does Harriet Goodale.

By 1868 was Compton a Registration District which would have included lots of the old parishes? If so, Frederick could have married in any one of those parishes. Your best bet to answer your questions would be to send for the marriage certificate.

No it wasn't - at that time Compton was in Wantage RD.

Yes, I took a look at the Districts on FreeBMD and realised Compton was never a Registration District. So, I'm not sure where you got your info from, Lesley.

Looking on FreeBMD again, the marriage is there, but under the Wantage Reg District - and, as Newburychap rightly points out, Compton is one of the parishes within that Reg District. There are over 50 parishes within Wantage Reg District - I'd definetly send for the certificate!!

I took and educated guess that it was Compton when I saw it was the Wantage district they were married in. Frederick was living in Compton in both the 1851 and 1861 Census. Harriett was from Norfolk.
All will become clear when I get the certificate.
