1851 census look up please
« on: Friday 22 February 08 22:47 GMT (UK) »

I am searching for my great grandmother Harriet Bailey she was born in Holbeach in 1843.  I have found BMD entry but can't find her parents from that so thought maybe they could be found in 1851 census.

There is a possibility she could have been born in March which I believe to be in Cambridgeshire but close to the border of Lincolnshire.

Any help would be appreciated.

Holbeach district does not cover any part of Cambs http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/holbeach.html

March was in North Witchford district

1851 had
Bourne Workhouse
Harriett BAILEY (Inmate)  7 Scholar, Birthplace Not Known

1861
Deeping St James
(in household of William ROBINSON)
Harriet BAILEY (boarder, unm) 20* AgLab, Birthplace not known
*Age originally entered as NK (not known) then 20 added above it.

Alternatively, between Harriet's birth and 1851, her mother could have (re)married so that Harriet appears with another name in the 1851 census ... without a birthplace, it's a bit difficult. Huh

Thank you for that, it appears to be a dead end then, what a shame.  I do know that Harriet ended up in London so I have her story from then on, its just a shame that I won't be able to find her parents now.

That was late at night defeatist thought from me, which I have now slept on and dreamt about. Dead ends are just more of a challenge.

I will go back through everything I have to see if I can get there any other way.

Is it possible to find out if any other family members were in the workhouse too?

Looks like you might have to send for the certificate for parents names as you say you have found her birth registration  Undecided

Just an update on this, I have found out from another relative via Ancestry that the parents of Harriet were William and Anne.  Anne came from Linclonshire and  William came from Nottingham.

Any chance of a look up in 1851 and 1861 to see who was in their household.

Thank You.

Some rather tentative burials - at Gedney

2 May 1868 William BAILEY (75)
31 July 1886 Ann BAILEY (91)

Originally I had misgivings, but am now happy with them ... but not with Ann's age, as this makes her 50+ when John was born.

Both 1871 and 1881 censuses show Ann's birthplace as Tumby - not close, but a lot closer than Risby.

In 1881, Ann is with a "daughter" Mary 40, born in Hull.

The 1871 saves us with
Gedney
John W BAILEY 24 Corn Porter, Holbeach (we have him in 1851)
Mary A 29 Yorks Hull

Thanks very much Cat and Geoff, that is brilliant and fits perfectly as Harriets trade when she is in London is dressmaker so I am sure you have the right one.  That has taken me another generation back for my tree and also a couple of cousins will be very grateful too.

Just an update, I have found out  Ann's maiden name was Benton and I have found an Ann Benton in IGI index born in Revesby 22/7/1802 this seems to be very near Tumby so I am guessing this is the one I want.  Parents names are John Benton and Ann Beech so that would fit with Ann's son being named for his grandfather.  All conjecture at this point but something to work on.
