Can anyone please help with Census look up for Portree Invernesshire?
I am looking for Swan family.My gggrandmother Mary Ann Swan bC1835 came to Australia.
My previous request failed to attract any answers. Cry

Census records for 1841 are free to look up on www.freecen.org.uk

On the home page of the above - click on search the data base.  Next page, top left change the year to 1841 - it defaults to 1891.  Enter Swan as a surname only.  - select Inverness-shire - press search and all the Swans come up.

According to the transcribed records there were only 13 Swans in Inverness-shire in 1841.  The only one remotely like your Mary Ann is the family below

All I have to go on at the moment is that her name was given as Mary Swan at the birth of her first child in Jul 1855 in Australia.Her age was given as 21.
She married Thomas Knight Jul 1854 at a sheep/cattle station in Australia,probably by a travelling minister.I hope to hear from the custodian of the marriage records soon.It is assumed that these records were maintained at the ministers home base where he later built a church.
Mary and Thomas had eight children and she was sometimes shown as just Mary,others Mary Ann.She may have been called Ann at the time of the Census,so as not to confuse with her mother.
