Just to confuse the issue, there are 2 Bradwells in Essex. One is Braintree district, the other, Bradwell-on-Sea, is on the east coast and I believe it comes under Maldon district. This is where Bradwell nuclear power station is.

No - I haven't found John South yet - There are 2 possible entries in Civil Reg for Maldon.

In the 3 DUR censuses I have for him he was b.c.1853 or 4 or 6. Always in Essex though.
But as I am not familiar with places in Essex I am trying censuses via ancestry  so lots of maps spread around!

I think this is your man, based on finding him b1854 laboring in Bermondsey, Leather Market in the 1881 census (RG11/558; Folio: 27; Page: 2 ) - couldnt see him in Durham till 1891 after marriage to Janet ... so might be total nonsense of course if you DO have him there in 1881...

working back from 1881 thru 1871 when he is in Bradwell, to 1861 with parents, but mistranscribed ... and age jumps around a bit - but I like the match with 1891 best ... Bradwell would have been his earliest memories of a PoB perhaps ....

1861 - RG9/1088; Folio: 13; Page: 19 - Bradwell, Malden District.

you dont mention the 1861 'find' ? Or are you getting the Marriage Cert to verify it ?

Can you please detail the 3 Durham Census in which you have found him ?
