Hello Isobel and Jennifer

Sat last night with all the info that had been gathered - all very interesting but Emily said her father, on the marriage certificate, was James Hedley, not Henry! Having said that there seems to be a strong link with your information which you had gathered.  Confusing .....

Did see someone who had also been researching our Emily, with a 'tree' on ancestry.  Their James came from Census 1861 Class: RG9; Piece: 3446; Folio: 36; Page: 7; but I can't find James before this census or after!! plus there appears to be inconsistencies here!

belgiumbird,

- all very interesting
I think it's rather more than 'interesting'  Grin

but Emily said her father, on the marriage certificate, was James Hedley, not Henry!
Information given on a mariage certificate  is not always the absolute truth!

I think you need to think about these points:

Sophia married a Henry Hedley in 1857

Sophia is apparently married to a Richard Walch/Walsh, a joiner in 1861 and living in Manchester

An Emily Walsh is born in Manchester in 1864.

I think what we have here is an extremely tangled web, but I have little doubt that this is the family you are looking for. Please don't dismiss it just because you can't find a James Hedley in the equation.

Jennifer

It might be worth spending a bit more time on this before doing so....it would be nice to try and find the family in 1871.......under whatever name they were masquerading at that time! I have been looking for them, but not much success so far.

I enjoy a good mystery Grin

If you did decide to send for Emily's birth cert, make sure you qualify it by saying you only want it if the mother's name is Sophia.

You're not going to believe this: in 1871 she's gone back to her maiden name and dropped the Sophia!
1871 census
RG10/ 4897/ Folio 37/Page 17
39 Lime Street,  Linthorpe, Middlesbrough

Ann Fawcett, Head, w, 39, dressmaker, Yorkshire, Richmond
Mary do, daur, 14, Lancashire, Manchester
Emily do, daur, 9, Lancashire, Manchester
Annie do, daur, 7, do do
Lilly do, 5, do, do do
Louise do, do, do do

No wonder the girls were confused about their father's name!

  I'm totally confused too!  LOL

Thank you so much for all your research, I just would never have got this far, probably would have given up.

Going to sit down and draw a tree so I can understand all this info  Smiley I shall also send for the birth certificate which should be interesting methinks

Again thank you, Glenda

Of course, this would only work if she was using the name Sophia at the time rather than one of her other aliases  Grin

You're just throwing a spanner in the works, Isobel!  ROFL

Well, she certainly seemed to have 'got around'!  Roll Eyes   I do have a feeling that this one is not going to be dead in the water yet though!  I have had a couple of people off the gene's ru site, one of whom has a 'members tree' on ancestry, get in touch during this last couple of days,  who firmly state that Emily's father is a 'James' Hedley with a long list of James's ancestors but they do not have much evidence to show coming forward!  Unlike me!  Grin

Thank you too for all your help!  How do you and Jennifer get any work done!   I've been so glued to this computer screen these last few days, everyone has had to get their own dinners and iron their own shirts!  Grin  Embarrassed   It's been great LOL
