Hello
I am trying to trace my paternal grandmother. As she died when my father was 12 my information is sketchy. My dad was born in Stockport and according to his birth certificate, his fathers name was Mark Webb and his mother Phyllis Web nee Lestrange. My dad never knew his father, he was always told he had died when my father was a baby.
My grandmother died aged 48 on 30th April 1937 while she and my dad were living in a rented room above Longhorn general shop, 91 North Street, Scarborough. At that time she was known as Phyllis Smith, but her death certificate shows her as Phyllis Winifred Manley-Smith, widow of James Manley-Smith, a master builder. Again this is someone my dad never knew. My dad was then placed into Sunnyside Children's Home until he was 13 and he was then sent to another home in Corsham, nr Portsmouth. From there he joined the army and was told that according to records his name was Web-Smith, but he doesn't know what records these were.
My dad was told that at some time she had worked at the Grand Hotel in Scarborough as a chef, but this is still to be confirmed. In 1978 my dad wrote to Scarborough Borough Council to try to find any available information. They wrote to the county archivist and although mention is made of my father (John Smith/Webb) in the minutes of North Riding Public Assistance Committee of 1937, there is no mention of his mother. In the register of children in care there is mention of a John Philip Smith-Manley with a brief note of his mother Mrs Phyllis W Smith-Manley (deceased). They also tried the Social Services department but no records could be found. This was all the information the council could give my dad.
I have been unable to find any birth/marriage records for my grandmother and would like to ask if anyone can advise me of other avenues to try. I have spoken to some very helpful people on the Stockport forum but again with no luck.
Many Thanks Lesley

Hi Joan
My dad's full name at birth was John Philip Webb and he was born 2nd July 1924. Someone on the Stockport forum kindly checked the electoral registers at the Stockport library for 1924/5 but there were other people shown at the address where his parents were apparently living, but his parents were not listed.
If you look at my posts you can see the dialogue from the Stockport forum, but you may have done this already.
Regards Lesley

Hi Joan
Thanks for that, I will try and contact the library to see if they can help with the newspaper information.
My husband had tried the Genes site but as since cancelled his account, hence the reason for no contact.
Regards Lesley

Hi Joan
Its encouraging to find some Lestrange's in Stockport, although my dad doesn't remember his mother having an accent. He can't picture her face but does remember her as having a posh voice. The Lestrange family also had a great house in Hunstanton until it was sold in 1954 and there are still members of the Lestrange family living there. My dad did write to them in 1989 but there is no mention of a Phyllis in their records. He was also told that his mother had worked on the Sandringham estate, but they have no details of her either, although they do say their records are not complete.
Going by the age on her death certificate, Phyllis would have been born about 1889 but as we have discovered in researching my mum's family, a persons age depends on which piece of paper you are looking at, so anything is possible.
Unfortunately part of your message has been deleted apparently due to a breach of copyright, so I don't know what other information you were trying to give.
I am currently waiting a response from the Grand Hotel in Scarborough, hopefully they might find something.
I am very grateful for the time you are spending on this and I keep on thinking my luck must change at some time.
Best Wishes Lesley
