Im currently at a stumble.....My great grandfather John Shiells has been a tad too slick for Google... I cant seem to track down his parents...Or his brothers or sisters in attempt to tie other families together and to go deeper into my/our roots..
What I do know on him is..
He was born in Westruther on 1794 and farmed his whole life along with his 2 boys... 1822 he was married Mary Nisbet in Channelkirk..... 1823-35 his Children were born in Crichton.... 1835-1841 The wife of John Shiells has appeared to have died prior to the 1841 Census or somewhere else 1859 They have appeared to move away from Myles Farm Tranent.. 1861 and after John and family appears to all have been living in Castle Ward Reg District, Northumberland (covers Black Callerton _____________________________________________________

Now there are a few maybes Im looking at ____________________________________
The location appears to be good for 1802 Westruther....
With naming pattern...We could assume James could have been male #2 or #3 of Andrew Shiells...But ofcourse no other children too be found by me for Andrew and Elizabeth Cleugh.....Using the same naming game....John Shiells the above had his second daughter named Elizabeth...

Heres a link showing a birth of James Shiells to an Andrew in Westruther in 1802

There is also some Court documents that list a brother to my John Shiells might be living in Newcastle around 1850-61..He name might have been...Andrew/James/Alexander......Maybe Johns family is from that area since when he got older they appear to move from Tranent back towards Northumberland...Newcastle..

Hi there
Just looked on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk website for your John Shiells birth to see if I could at least find his father's name for you but after putting in "John Shiells" and "Westruther" and the date you put, I came up with nothing. The closest person I found was a Thomas Sheills born in Chirnside, Berwickshire on 9 Jun 1797. His parents names were James Sheill and Sidney (which is a bit of a strange name for a woman back then!)
I don't know if that is much help to you, at all
Regards
Gayle

Hi Jason,
I've stumbled on this site and have been reading with gtreat interest your long correspondence. John is a son of Andrew and Betty (Elizabeth Cleugh). Betty Cleugh was the eldest child of John Cleugh and Margaret Hardie. I am a descendant of a younger daughter Isabella Cleugh who married a John Dickson. My descent goes through (briefly) their daughter Margaret Dickson Chisholm.....Janet Chisholm McIntosh.....Mary Isabella McIntosh Hill Nicolson (marr. twice).....George Hill.....George Hill.....Elizabeth Margaret Hill Ellery (my mother). Thought you'd be interseted. I can send you more info. if you like.

Andrew Shiels married Elizabeth (Betty) Cleugh at Melrose in the Scottish Borders 17 June 1786. To my knowledge at present they had:
1. Andrew b. c. 1787 who married Jean Rankin, farmed at Headshaw, near Lauder and had a large family of 7 sons and 4 daughters. 2. Margaret b. Lauder 11 Feb. 1789 3. Betty b. Lauder 6 June 1791 4. John b. Wetsruther 12 Jan. 1794 who married Mary Nisbet 5. James b. Westruther 7 March 1802 who married Margaret Wight, and had a large family of 3 sons and 6 daughters.

A step backwards is great progress

Jason, Although I have no known relationship to Andrew and James SHIEL, just the connection to my RUNCIMAN family, I thought I'd give an update, and thank whoever posted the MIs that allowed me to update Andrew and Betty (CLEUGH)'s dates on that page, seeing as you quoted my web pages above.
http://familytree.lornahen.com/p41638.htm is the most up to date info I have for James, son of Andrew and Betty. The 1841 census above at Hyndsidehill is James and Margaret (WIGHT) with their family at that date, and for once the ages look about right, unlike for some of them in later census records. Andrew SHIEL and Elizabeth CLEUGH's marriage appears on the IGI as an extracted record in Melrose, which could go some way to explain how come James and Margaret seem to have moved to Melrose before the 1851 census (Colmslie Hill). The IGI also has the baptisms of two daughters, Margaret and Betty, both Lauder, and both extracted records, to Andrew and Betty (CLEUGH) SHIEL(L).
I can add that James and Margaret (WIGHT) SHIEL's dtr Mary married a James JOHNSTON, and was farming at Norton, Par. of Lauder, 1861.
I do have a Robert SHIEL on my direct line, which is partly why I was interested in the James who was connected to my RUNCIMAN family, and WIGHT is one of my major lines, but not this lot.
Good luck
