Born Bavaria 1933
« on: Sunday 24 February 08 10:40 GMT (UK) »

I have a Henry D Scott (possibly D = Daman), according to the English Census 1861 onwards he was born in Bavaria 1833 & is noted as a British Subject. He doesn't appear in England in 41 or 51 so possibly still overseas.

Obviously before UK Civil Registration & nothing on IGI, is there any small possibility of any record of his birth?

He married Mary Elizabeth...Huh about 1853/4, but no sign of this on the English registrations either.

Also, what would a British family be doing in Bavaria in the 1830s?

Any ideas would be welcome.

At this point I would recommend first getting the birth certificate of one of their children (possibly one of the eldest to make sure that Mary wasn't the second wife).

Origins 1861 has a bad scan, but it looks to me like there's a son John D Scott, aged 17, in 1871 who isn't there in 1861. He may be John Demetrius Scott (from freebmd), who is with two sisters and his grandparents in 1861 (in Louth).

Sister Julia Jane Scott is still with the grandparents in 1871 - surname of grandparents appears to be maybe Nelthorpe (still in Louth).

There is a possible marriage in 1851 in Manchester - Mary Elizabeth Nelthorpe and Henry Scott (freebmd).

Thanks Jorose...... I think you are right & I will check it out later. The Nelthorpe name sounds right..... I am particularly interested in the son Amelius & have sent off for both his birth certificate & death certificate. According to family legend his name was:

Amelius Beauclerk Nelthorpe Francis Henry William John Agustin SCOTT.

What a mouthful.
