This is my first posting on this board, I hope I have the correct county!

I am looking for the baptism records of Mary Hinch born about 1818 in Orton Waterville

She married William Pell in 1840 at the parish church Orton Waterville just before the first national census so I am trying to locate her parents. The marriage certificate lists John Hinch a labourer as her father. There are two John Hinches in the area, one born in Denton Northamptonshire living in Orton who was a shepherd and the other living in Boonfield St John the Baptist Peterborough who is a labourer. The second John had a daughter called Mary in the 1830s so is unlikely to have named two daughters by the same name.

I would be so grateful for any information the baptism records could offer.

Would it be possible to look for the marriage records of her parents too?

Welcome to Hunts!

Unfortunately there's no marriage in Hunts of a John Hinch after 1768, nor are there any Hinch burials in Orton Waterville 1701-1800.

The only Hinch marriages in Orton Waterville are
Elizabeth who married Abraham Whittle of Peterborough in 1835; and
Sarah who married Thomas Judd of Steeple Gidding in 1771

Even worse news is that there's no transcript of the parish register available from Hunts FHS, nor is it on the IGI or BVRI. The good news is that the register has been filmed by the LDS so is available for viewing at your nearest Family History Centre of the LDS.

I will hold on to the information about Sarah and Elizabeth Hinch until I am able to trace my Hinch line back to those dates; they might fit in. Wink

I am a bit perplexed about the lack of a marriage reference for John Hinch in Orton, perhaps he lived and married in Northamptonshire before the birth of his daughter Mary in Orton in 1818. He was born in Denton and according to the 1861 census, his wife Mary came from Peterborough.

I need to check that the 1861 reference to Mary Hinch (John's wife) is the mother for Mary Hinch (the daughter) so I am still looking for baptismal records!

It is reassuring to hear the LDS have them on film. I will arrange a visit if a RootsChatter can't help.

I have made some ground over the weekend and I can now link up Elizabeth Hinch as a daughter to John and Mary Hinch and a sister to Mary Hinch Jnr. Grin

Do you have any other details of her marriage to Abraham Whittle, such as the date of marriage and witnesses? I have been able to follow the Whittle family through the censuses and another brother John Hinch has emerged...yippee!!!!

Still working on Sarah Hinch. Any further details on her marriage may help me to link her up.

The two marriages were taken from Hunts Marriage Index, which is just that - an index. It gives only year of marriage, names of the two parties, parish of residence, and the parish where the marriage took place. You need to refer to the parish register for full details

Thank you for getting back to me David. I think a trip to the London LDS is called for.

We are visiting Orton Waterville next weekend as my Mother's Day treat. Really looking forward to picking up the atmosphere of these old villages. I may find a few Hinches in the graveyards!
