I am trying to find out more information on Alexander Edward Forbes Morsion, who owned the land in which my cottage is on now.

The info I have so far is, Alexander was a J.P and Dupty Lieut of the area early in 1900s. But what I would like to find out, did he have the cottage built when he owned the land, or was it someone else before him??

The first thing you need to do is have a look at the valuation rolls. There could possibly be some copies in the library in Banff, and there are definitely some Banffshire ones, but not a complete set, in the Moray Heritage Centre in Elgin. There should be some in libraries/archives in Aberdeen and/or library HQ in Oldmeldrum. There is a complete set in the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh.

These will tell you the names of the proprietor, tenant and occupier of every dwelling in the parish, and they were compiled annually, so you can track back through the years to about the mid-19th century.

You could try here -
http://www.ros.gov.uk/

I've found them very helpful in the past when I was trying to establish who EXACTLY owned a particular building.

I does cost some money though, but what doesn't these days.

You can contact them here -
Meadowbank House, 153 London Road, Edinburgh, EH8 7AU
Tel: 0131 659 6111 Fax: 0131 479 3688

Cheers
