Death of Daniel Stewart Loanhead (?)
« on: Sunday 24 February 08 11:36 GMT (UK) »

Looking for details of death of Daniel Stewart. Born Cullen Banffshire c.1843. Moved to Edinburgh area in 1860'S. Married Jane Thomson of Loanhead c1866. Jane died in 1878. Don't think there were any children. Last trace of Daniel is in 1881 census, living with his brother John (a stonemason) and his family in Loanhead. After that there is no sign of him. Brother John was married to Margaret Thomson, Jane's sister. Any help gratefully appreciated.

Marriage record on SP. If you view it, it should give you his mothers name which should help finding his death record

Hi there,

A submitted entry on the IGI gives a marriage date of 24th June 1869 in Loanhead for Daniel and Jane. It also gives a christening date in Cullen of 11st September 1843 in Cullen, although it doesn't add his parents. However, there's an extracted record for Daniel ... born 6th September and bapt. 11th September 1843 in Cullen, parents Alexander Stewart and Elspet Grant.

There's only one Daniel Stewart death between 1881 and 1891 in Midlothian. His age is unrecorded on the index, so it could be why you can't find him. Smiley Either the death cert., or the marriage record sancti provided above, should confirm the parents' names.

Thanks sancti and hume24 for info. Keen to find out about death in Midlothian between 1881 and 1891, hume24. I checked IGI but could only find one death entry for a Daniel Stewart but that was in Fife area. I have been a regular visitor to Register House  in Edinburgh in relation to my family research and, unless I have missed it which is quite possible, I have not come across a death entry for a Daniel Stewart in the Midlothian area. Is there anymore you can tell me?

Hi again,

I haven't viewed the certificate (or the index entry) on ScotlandsPeople for the death, I only adjusted the search options (age range, etc) to narrow one down. It shows as Daniel Stewart, aged 0, died 1890 in the St George district, Edinburgh. Smiley

Hi Sancti, checked out this Stirling death. Wasn't the right Daniel Stewart unfortunately. Will keep searching.

Hi sancti, I actually have a great deal of info. (parents, siblings, marriage etc.) about Daniel up to his appearance in 1881 census in Loanhead (after which he seems to 'vanish'). The same scenario actually goes for his brother William (born Cullen 1845). In 1871 census he, just like Daniel did later on, stayed with their elder brother John and family in Loanhead. As with Daniel's case, William never appears again. My main problem with William is that having such a common christian and surname it is hard for absolute certain to know whether or not I have come across him after 1871 amongst so many William Stewarts in Midlothian and Scotland generally. Daniel Stewart is slightly different because Daniel is a rather easier name to work on - less peole with that  name. Who knows, maybe he emigrated. One day perhaps I will get the better of this brick wall.

Good luck Doddie

I have a gg grandfather Daniel Stewart who was born in Grantown, Invernesshire in 1832. He also went to Edinburgh and looked after his daughter Elizabeth, with his mother Elizabeth (Forsyth from Inverness)) as his daughter's mother died after childbirth. I eventually found out that Daniel died in Rosslyne Asylum, Midlothian in 1900 having come from Dalkeith Poorhouse.

All much the same area/time as "your" Daniel. I have come across some of the above names in my searches around "my" Daniel.

The 1901 census for England and Wales has a Daniel aged 57 born Scotland in Kent.    There is also an Eliza aged 61 also in Kent, which may or may not be linked to a wedding in 1885 in Bromley between a Daniel Stewart and Eliza Wykes.    Oh, and there is a death of a Daniel Stewart aged 62 in 1906 in Bromley, Kent.

Further looking no doubt required.
