Divorce files for England and Wales from 1858 onwards are held in The National Archives, and you can search them online in the Catalogue

www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp

Enter the surname in the 'Word or phrase' box, and J77 in the 'Department or series code' box. You can restrict it by date if you want to, particularly useful if the name is a common one. Be flexible with dates, because the records are arranged by date of filing, which might be some time before the divorce was granted.

If there is a file, you will either have to go to Kew to look at it, or get someone to do it on your behalf, because they are original documents. You could also contact Record Copying at Kew who can give you an estimate for a copy.

Hi
Thanks so much for the info looked at the site but could not find a possible divorce for that period of time for the name, so my search still goes on, I have one Thomas newton just vanished after his marriage in 1872  no death records no divorce etc although wife remarries in 1873 stating she is a widow strange. he was a sailor maybe died at sea or in anouther country although still cant find him on deaths away from England Very odd.
Thanks anyway

Deaths at sea or in other countries can be notoriously difficult to find, so it could be that it is there somewhere, but just not findable! Another possibility is that a person can be legally declared dead, and their spouse is then free to remarry, in which case there would be no entry in the death registers. In this particular case it is unlikely, because of the short time span (you couldn't get a divorce that quickly either), and since your man was a sailor I'd say he probably died at sea. Deaths at sea would be recorded in the ship's log, but if the ship went down with all hands, there was no one to report it, and no log!
