Duke of Leinster's lands in Athy
« on: Sunday 24 February 08 15:16 UTC (UK) »

My GGGGrandfather Adam Talbott moved from Scotland to Birtown, outside Athy in the early 1850's (he was there for Griffiths).  He was on 200 acres of land leased from the Duke of Leinster.
I am trying to find out anything about why he might have come to the land or if there are any records of the land.

Because of the time I think there might have been something to do with the famine, but that is only speculation on my behalf.

Has anyone got any ideas?

It may have been connected with the Encumbered Estates Act of 1849 designed to assist the landlords exchange land following the Famine.

Google "duke of leinster athy famine evictions" to get a picture of situation c 1849.There are a number of fascinating sites available.Basically the existing tenants and labourers couln't pay rents to landlords, due to effects of the Famine and people such as Duke of Leinster, who owned 67,000 acres in Kildare alone decided to evict them and replace them with British tenants who could pay.

Hello RoryT,

Do you need help in Athy, Co Kildare? Celtic Damsel may be able to find some information there. It's a pity she wasn't at the gathering we had at Pearse Street earlier this year. When's the next one going to take place? By the look of things you may have to come to Belfast at some stage. www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,183659.0.html

I sent you a message earlier today relating the Leinster Papers held at PRONI. Some of these relate to the affairs of the Dukes of Leinster in the municipal boroughs of Harristown and Athy up to the early years of the nineteenth century.
