Lowe- Glassan and ilkenny West, Toberclare
« on: Sunday 02 August 09 18:03 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for information on Lowe's who lived in Kilkenny West and neighboring Toberclare townlands, Kilkenny West parish, in the 18th and 19th centuries.

I would like to know more about a report that Nathaniel Lowe/ Low, of the Westmeath Lowe family, who founded Lowville in Galway, put up a high stone tower on a hill in Kilkenny West so that people could signal him at his Galway estate.

First of all, what land did this Nathaniel own in Kilkenny West, how did he come by it, and who did he pass it on to?

Second, what was in his mind when he put up that tower?

Third, where exactly is this tower?  Highest hill between Glassan and KilkennyWest appears to be too close to Glasson.   Kf you look at it from the air, do you mostly see a little driveway around the top of the hill?   If it's somewhere else, was it built on a lower hill because Nathaniel Lowe's lands only extended so far?

If anyone knows the genealogy of the Lowe's of Kilkenny West, that would be great.

Does anyone have or know wehre to find, grave transcriptions for Kilkenny West, maybe tehChurch of Ireland graveyard, maybe some "mixed" graveyard nearby?   Seems like alot of 19th century Lowes in the area who didn't live there got buried there.  I'm curious to know who, why, and their dates of birth and death.

Finally, who's the closest local historian, or who is someone who lives there who knows the area's history?

Thanks!

Lowe family, Glassan

I notice that there are some local people, and people with access to local people, in on this discussion.

I am looking for some information on a family in the area of Glassan, Kilkenny West, and Toberclare, that a local person would be likely to have.

Specifically, it seems like a Lowe family had some sort of base of operations there in the mid 18th through 19th centuries, when all sorts of Lowes who didn't live or attend church anywhere near there were still buried there.

I would like to find out anything I can about them.

Second, there's this big tower/ obelisk on a field northeast of Glassan, possibly in the townland of Kilkenny West.  I understand a possibly ancestor of mine put it up.   Name of Nathaniel Low/ Lowe.   I'd like to know what local people might be able to fill me in about it.    I am curious what was going on in his mind.

Also I've been unable to place him in his own family; who else in his family owned the same land?

Thanks!

Yours,
Dora Smith

Folks, I'm tracing 18th and early 19th century Lowe's.

Honest, there were people working on them here!   And people who actually live locally.

Seems like today, all I can get is people posting from the 1911 census!

Come on, folks, I have an Ancestry subscription!

Not sure that I understand your post. Seanmac has kindly posted details from 1901 census which is not available on Ancestry (they have very few Irish records actually). While you said you are looking for Lowes in 18th and 19th century some of the 19th century ones could certainly appear in 1901 and even 1911 census. Perhaps you should contact the local library to see if they can either provide you with answers to your questions or suggest where you can check next.

Tracing an ancestor usually means trying to find his parents.  I already know who are the man's descendants!

The way you're reorganizing my posts on a daily basis, it's no wonder noone's answered the specific questions I actually asked about Glassan and Kilmenny West.   The people from those areas that I addressed my replies to can't even find my posts where you moved them to.    AND, you've created no way to get to their individual e-mail addresses.

ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!

I have merged your thread together to avoid needless duplication and confusion. People that look at Westmeath board will have no problem finding your posts here.

You've asked for "information on Lowe's who lived in Kilkenny West and neighboring Toberclare townlands, Kilkenny West parish, in the 18th and 19th centuries." If you want to trace someone's ancestry back please give us the details of what you already know about the person and what information you'd like to find.

Regarding your comment "AND, you've created no way to get to their individual e-mail addresses" I have not done anything- email address cannot be posted online here- please read sections of help pages which explains about posting guideline and using PM (personal message) system to exchange email address.
