Where is the occupation mentioned, and what year is this?
It could be something to do with being a recipient of alms, i.e. charity - for example living in an almshouse.

Pruem is correct. The occupation column of the census entry is frequently used to show a persons source of income: independent means, annuitant or in this case alms
