Fellows - West Bromwich
« on: Sunday 24 February 08 23:00 GMT (UK) »

I'm looking for any information on the Fellows family, who lived in the Swan Village area of West Bromwich. My Gt Grandmother was Mary Jane Fellows, born in 1869. Her father was Joseph Fellows and her mother was Mary Morton.

I have several census records for the Fellows, where by it states that Joseph was born in West Bromwich. Going by his age he would have been born around 1837, however on his marriage certificate in 1863, he was 23 years of age, which means he would have been born in 1840.

Joseph's father was stated as Thomas Fellows, and a miner on the marriage certificate. I do have a 1841 census, which has a Thomas Fellows, as a miner, with a son Joseph, however the age of Joseph is 6, putting his birth year at around 1835.

There are no registered births for a Joseph Fellows in West Bromwich for either of these dates.

If anyone knows of this family, is related, or can help me go further back down the fellows line, and help me confirm when Joseph was born, then i'd be grateful.  Grin

Hi Donna.

thanks for your reply... as I stated I did have the 1841 Census, which confused me somewhat with the dates... but having seen the other two you have found, it does make me wonder if the Joseph stated in them actually is my Gt Gt Grandfather. Obviously the dates of the children seem to change by a few years over that thirthy year period, so maybe they are the same.

It's hard to establish though because as I said there were no certificates in West Bromwich, but there are a few around in that 3-4 year period where the Joseph Fellows is classed as being registered in the Dudley area - Tipton at this time came under Dudley reg area, so maybe he was born on the border!

I'll maybe have to buy a few certs to see.

Hi Donna, yes I'll definately have a look at those... the one thing is rather interesting actually. You found the one where they were living at 2 Old Forge... In one of the later census records I have with my gt grandmother she is also living at the Old Forge also!!

It's quite late in the day and I'm not thinking fully straight... what are the St Peter's names and dates refering to... are they marriages also or births/baptisms?

That's great stuff, I'll try and sort all of this information out and examine it a little further to see if it can help answer my questions. I'm sure there's a connection here... it's too much of a coincidence otherwise.

Thanks Donna

Hi there Populardude
Have just started to catch up on my ancestry tracing and see that you are interested in the surname "Fellows".  I also am trying to trace a Elizabeth Fellows born 1833c in West Bromwich who married a George Williams.  According to the 1871 they were living at 133 Mill Street, West Bromwich.  Their frist child was Sarah born 1855 followed by Alice 1856 followed by another 8 children.  Wondered whether there was any connection somewhere
along the line.  I am having difficulty tracing the marriage of Elizabeth and George and now hope you may be able to help.

Hi Jonjor

The fellows family is something that i started to look at but haven't really gone that much into it.. somethings were hard to find in terms of my gt gt grandfathers birth, and as of yet still do not know when he was born and cannot trace his family back...

There maybe a connection somewhere along the lines and indeed Elizabeth Fellows may have been the sister etc.. of my Gt Gt Grandfather who was Joseph Fellows. I will be starting to look at this family soon and therefore let you know if any of your names seem to match up anywhere.

With regards to tracing the marriage, have you looked at the archives library in Smethwick.. if you haven't found anything under their names.. looking under different spellings may help.. there may have been mistakes by the registrar.. i have found lots of these examples in my other research.

Thanks Donna for more info on Elizabeth Fellows.  Did you get this from the 1851 Census?
Haven't had time to follow Rich's suggestions yet but if you should come across the marriage of 1833 Elizabeth to George Williams born 1829/31 would appreciate any info.

Hi Joan,
yes it was the 1851 and sorry i have looked for the marriage of Elizabeth and cannot find anything to match (my Elizabeth Fellows also married a Williams but he was a John)
there was a Benjamin Fellow(e)s next door in both 1851 and 1841 census which might  have been Edwards dad

Hi Donna

Appreciate your efforts in trying to trace Elizabeth's marriage.  Who knows I may just come
across it one day but am certainly not having a lot of luck at the moment.
