Help: Emigrant to Canada: Younie
« on: Monday 25 February 08 04:16 GMT (UK) »

Hi,  Seeking help to locate a lost rellie Grin

Looking for my Gt Grandfathers brother who supposedly went to Canada, I was led to believe he was an M.D.

Details are:

Father: James Younie b 1827 Rothes, Morayshire d 1909
Mother: Jane Stewart b 1835 Dufftown, Moray. d 1874

Uncle (son) Alexander Younie b 31/8/1868 at Rothes.

No other records can I find on him.

A young Canadian Airman named William Younie, called in to visit the Younie family in early 1940's in Scotland.  Could it be this man who was grandson to Alexander?

He was: William Alexander Younie; Canadian Pilot Officer (Air Bomber) in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

died 3/6/1944 buried at Ecquetot Communal Cemetery.

son of William and Jessie Younie: husband of Vera Evelyn Younie of Glamorgan (at the time)

Sorry I dont have any more info.  I just know my Gt Grandfather James Younie b 11/9/1860 went to Tasmania via Queensland in 1883 and settled there permanently.  His brother went to Canada.

Do you have any idea when Alexander would have immigrated to Canada, and where he might have ended up? Each Province in Canada holds it's own records.

Here are some links that might help you find him.

Hello Janice,

Thanks for the interesting sites.  I believe I may have found two members of the family - at least the ages match Huh.

On the Passenger lists:

William & Female? YOUNIE (both 30) departure 1910 from Glasgow to Halifax, Canada.  Could be the step-brother to Alexander who may have gone to Canada too.

He was born on 11/8/1880 at Rothes, Morayshire, Scotland to James Snr Younie and Helen Younie.

Also on the lists:
Alexander Younie (44)  born on 31/8/1868 at Rothes, Morayshire to James Snr and Jane Younie (1st wife)

travelling from Glasgow to Quebec, Canada in 1913 with
Charlotte (40); Alex (11) Younie.

This could be the brother of my Gt Grandfather James Younie Jnr who went to Tassie to live in 1883.

How can I find out any further info?

Thank you for what you have done.

There is a 1901 Census record from Scotland for Alexander Younie, his wife Charlotte and their son Alexander S.  They are recorded at 96 Cran Street, Maryhill, Lanarkshire.  Alexander's occupation is listed as Police Constable.  I found the record on Ancestry.

I stumbled upon it because their son, Alexander Stuart Younie, turned up in Canada and died in Vancouver in 1982.  I had a quick look at his death certificate but I didn't think he was a match and didn't take down any notes.....until I saw your post when I got home.  But now I am wondering if he is a match after all Huh

From memory, he was born in Scotland, married to a Laverne or Laverna and was a caterer.  I think I also saw a Border Crossing record for him on Ancestry.

Do you think this might be your family?  If so, I'll go back and take down all the details.

Wow, that sure sounds like our man.

The fact that he is in Lanarkshire could help solve another mystery.  His niece and her family moved there about that time and I found them briefly in Lanarkshire before they moved to the spouses farm in Yorkshire later on.  Perhaps he was the connection there?

(His brother James' niece from Tasmania married a Yorkshire farmer in Tasmania - they resettled in Yorkshire - his dad was elderly so I think he came back to UK to run farm)

Alexander snr's mother was Jane Younie Nee Stuart - that name is handed on down the line with their other son John naming his son Charles Stuart Younie.

Jane died in 1874 when the children were still quite young and the father James Younie remarried in 1879.

He had 2 more sons - one dies at 19 in 1902 and the other one I believe is the William b 1880 also on the shipping list in 1910**.  I found him in Lanarkshire (Glasgow) in 1901 census, boarding with a family at 717 New City Road, Kelvinside, Glasgow working as a Barman.

Also, looks like Alexander Stuart Younie and the family are on the shipping list for 1913.  So maybe it IS them.

Maybe William Younie who was killed in WW2 is William's son?**

Looking forward to seeing what develops.  Thank you,

Barb

Barb - sorry, busy week and it took me a while to get back to the library but here is what I found:

Charlotte Younie - died 24 July 1955
Died at Bayview Hospital in Vancouver.  In city & province 3yrs prior to death and in Canada 20yrs prior to death.  Widow of Alexander Younie.  Born on 10 Mar 1872 in Glasgow.  Father unknown Thompson born Scotland, mother unknown.  Informant was son AS Younie of 3596 West Broadway, Vancouver (same as residence for Charlotte).  She died of hypostatic pneumonia and chronic myocarditis.  She wasn't buried in BC, her remains were "removed for burial" in Edson, Alberta.

I looked up her obituary and it listed that she was survived by one son, Alex of Vancouver, 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.  Also 1 sister and 2 brothers.  It confirmed that her remains were sent to Edson for services and internment.

Alexander Stuart Younie - died 10 Sep 1982
Died at Vancouver General Hospital; the more recent death registrations don't list how long they've been in Canada.  His usual residence was listed as #1 - 3596 West Broadway, Vancouver.  His occupation was Caterer in the Restaurant trade.  Born on 24 Sep 1900 in Glasgow, father Alexander Younie born Elgin Scotland, mother Charlotte Thomson born Glasgow.  Informant was his wife Laverne Alexandria McKenzie.  He died of congestive cardiac failure and was cremated.  The registration also lists that he suffered an accidental fall in the home resulting in laceration of the head on 29 Aug 1982 but it was not related to his death.

His obituary noted that he was survived by his wife, a son and daughter (I'll PM the names as they may still be living), 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Laverne Alexandria Younie - died 3 Aug 1983
Died at Vancouver General Hospital and the usual residence was the same address on Broadway.  She was a widow of Alex Younie; born on 24 May 1904 in Collingwood, Ontario, father was Kenneth McKenzie born Canada and Florence Black, born Canada.  Her daughter acted as informant.  She died of heart disease and was also cremated.  She had surgery on 21 Mar 83 for a fractured left hip.

I also checked the border crossing records for them on Ancestry:
Charlotte travelled from Winnipeg to Jacksonville, Florida in Mar 1924.  Alexander Stuart travelled from Vancouver to Seattle in Oct 1923 and from Jasper Park, Alberta to Babb, Montana in 1937.  His occupation was listed as Tailor. Laverne also travelled to Babb, Montana in 1937 accompanied by son James and son Alex Jr.  Her next of kin was listed as her mother, Mrs Florence Whitelow of Jasper Park, Alberta.  I have the images saved if you are interested in them.  I just checked the BC Vital Events again and there is a death record for a James Kenneth Younie in Vancouver in 1963, aged 41.  Could be their son as Laverne's father's name was Kenneth.

I couldn't find any record of Alexander Sr but since Charlotte's body was returned to Edson, I have to assume he was buried there as well.  Perhaps she joined son Alex in Vancouver following her husband's death.  Records in Alberta aren't online but perhaps one of the Rootschatters there can offer some suggestions.

Hope this helps,
Lynwen
