I was clutching at straws really as I used to live near Chertsey.
I assume that you have information on him at the North Surrey District School c1871, was this from the Surrey History Centre?

Moores at the North Surrey District School in 1871, perhaps some are related?
Robert, 11 James, 9 Elizabeth, 11 Harriet, 14
All are listed as b. Wandsworth but all the birthplaces seem to be dittoed down.
If the one aboard the Antelope in 1881 is yours, he was born Chertsey? That would seem to match with one of the sets of service records shown here: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/ (Robert Moore, birthdate 15 September 1859, birthplace Chertsey, Surrey).
It also seems he may have taken up the "Ernest" later in life. Name for his father may or may not be correct - depending on how early in life he went into care.
There don't seem to be many Moores in the Chertsey area. There is a Robert Chalton/Chatton/Chattan/? aged 1, a nurse child, living with Crispin Paine and family in Chertsey in 1861, and also a Robert Dalwood, aged 3 months (the latter seems to be in another institution in 1871, I can't find Robert Chalton later on).
Re: Leamington Priors, there is a Humphrey Moore (maybe grandfather instead of father?) who is in that area in 1841, 1861, 1871. He married Rebecca Reading in 1826 (IGI). If Robert was illegitimate, one of Humphrey's daughters as shown on the IGI (Sarah Harriet, Mary Ann, or Ellen Rebecca), could be his mother.
From the censuses and IGI, Mary Ann married Edward Lewis (her daughter Ellen Rebecca Lewis is on the 1871 with her aunt Ellen Rebecca). Ellen Rebecca Moore married Joseph Toulmin but not until 1868 (aged 30) and is still with her parents in 1861. Sarah Harriet may have died in 1850 - someone with access to 1851 could help on this point.

I think this must be the 1851 Jorose was looking for -
HO107/2072 Folio 533 Page 15 10 Russell Street, Leamington Priors, Warwickshire Humphrey Moore 51 Shooing Smith Birmingham Rebecca 49 T/Seachbrook? Sarah Harriett 17 Milliner Leamington Mary Ann 16 Assistant Teacher Leamington Ellen Reb 12 Scholar Leamington Thomas 9 Scholar Leamington Walter 5 Leamington + 15yr old house servant Maria Byuley? (over page)
so Sarah Harriett alive and kicking in 1851...

I see you mention Mary Ann marrying an Edward Lewis, so what about this birth?
Robert Ernest Lewis Dec 1861 Chertsey Vol 2a Page 27
I see the marriage was in 1857, therefore he would have been born in wedlock, so cant think why he might revert to his mother's maiden name later on (if this is him, that is)

Nicely spotted!
Still can't see Sarah Harriet - this is the Lewis family in 1861:
RG9/4250 13/19 Broad Street, Newtown, Montgomeryshire Edward Lewis, 36, innkeeper, b. Newtown Mary Ann, 26, wife, b. Leamington Florentia Harriett, 3, dau, b. Newtown Ellen Rebecca, 2, dau, b. Newtown Edward Humphrey Lewis, 10months, son, b. Newtown
in 1871, Ellen Rebecca is with the Toulmins. Florentia marries 1898 in Newtown but haven't been able to spot her in the 1871 census yet (in 1881 she's a servant in Manchester). Mary Ann has remarried:
RG10/5615 14/20 Broad Street (Kings Head), Newtown David Kinsey, head, 56, innkeeper, b. Montgomeryshire (can't read place) Mary Ann, wife, 36, b. Leamington George H, son, 13, b. Montgomeryshire Llandin??? Edward H, step-son, 10, b. Newtown Joseph C, step-son, 7, b. Newtown

Hi Jorose & CatOne, I didn't expect half as much help as I'm getting & it is truely appreciated. The place in Montgomeryshire is probably Llandinham?-this is really fascinating 'cause the Moores had 'Publican' connections & at one point Nan & G.Dad lived at Churchstoke which is not far from Newtown-incidently he was Robert Ernest as well. This is fantastic.Thank-you all.
