Can you give us a bit more information to work with please?  Are you sure about the marriage - there's a baptism of Joshua son of Joshua and Sarah at Sawbridgeworth on that date listed on the IGI - unlikely (but not impossible) that they'd get married on the same day.

Did the family then move to Lambeth - these baptisms are all from the IGI:
Joshua BIRD ch. 19 Mar 1815, Sawbridgeworth
Ann BIRD ch. 17 Jul 1816, St Mary, Lambeth
Eliza BIRD ch. 18 Nov 1821, St Mary, Lambeth
Mary Ann BIRD ch. 18 Apr 1824, St Mary, Lambeth
Elizabeth BIRD ch. 6 Sep 1829, St Mary, Lambeth

Have you found them in any of the censuses, which might point to places of birth?  (Afraid I don't currently have access to them myself to check, but maybe someone could have a look in the 1851 census?)  Otherwise, it's a bit of a needle in a haystack job.
Thanks
Richard.

Hi Barnaby,

Welcome to Rootschat and Hertfordshire.

The 1851 under ref.HO107/1573 F.23 P.38 records Joshua BIRD age 60 Greengrocer born Essex, Sarah age 59 born Bishops Stortford, Herts and daughter Mary Ann single age 27 born Lambeth, living at Lambeth.

Hope this helps.

Regards   ...   Peter

Hi Richard,

Thanks very much for looking, but I already have that information.

The only places of birth I can find are on  1851 Census.

Joshua BIRD age 60 Greengrocer born Essex
Sarah   BIRD age 59  born Bishopstordford

From IGI Baptism of Joshua BIRD  ch.1815, it  has Joshua BIRD and Sarah BIRD as parents.Do you think this is an error or a BIRD marrying a BIRD?

1841 Census has Joshua BIRD as a fruiterer.

Sorry this is all I have to go on,

         THANKS AGAIN Smiley

Hi Barnaby

Sadly a marriage at this date will not give any parental information, from 1753 - 1837 the only information that would be given would be:

* Names of bride and groom
*Date of Marriage
* Whether by banns or licence
* Marital Status (Single or Widowed)
* Whether or not they were of the parish. (If not of the parish, the latest parish of settlement should be given)
*Names of 2 Witnesses

The extracted baptism entry for Joshua in 1815 gives his parents as Joshua Bird and Sarah, exactly as one would expect, so I see no reason to think that Sarah was also a Bird.  Sawbridgeworth marriages for that period have been extracted onto the IGI and there's no Joshua, although there are plenty of other Birds. Same story with Bishops Stortford. So it seems as though they married elsewhere

I think that probably the easiest way to settle this would be for someone to check the Allen Index (Index to Herts marriages before 1837) at HALS.

As previously explained, this will not help with baptismal details for either Joshua or Sarah, but it would give a definite date and place if the marriage took place in Hertfordshire.

Hi Barnaby,

I searched the Allen Index of Hertfordshire Marriages but regret there is no entry for Joshua BIRD.

Hi Barnaby

Thanks to Peter checking the Allen Index, I'm afraid that this means that Joshua and Sarah were not marriage in Hertfordshire.  Perhaps you should now concentrate you search in Essex?

Consequently, I will now move your request to the COMPLETED board.
