Hi Maureen

What period are you looking for?  Formal adoption did not start in the UK until about 1927. Adoption records are closed except to the adopted person.

Do you have your own birth certificate?
This will indicate if you are adopted or not.

If you find out that you were adopted, and a full birth certificate will confirm that.  It will be "An entry into the Adoption Register", then you can arrange an appointment with your local social services who can obtain your original birth certificate.  I have to say that the interview I had with Soc. Services on Wirral was a joke.  I was born in 1947 so am quite old enough to deal with this by myself!!
However,  They may also be able to furnish you with details of the paperwork from the adoption society.  Be prepared for disappointment - your birth mother may not want to have any contact and you should be aware of that.  She may also have died.
Very best wishes and good luck
