I am trying to find the parents of Elizabeth Pennington, born abt 1841 in Liverpool, also any trace of Elizabeth in Liverpool before her marriage in June 1863 at Toxteth Park, St. John the Baptist, Liverpool to Peter Harpell (he was Canadian).
Many thanks for any help

Do you have Elizabeth's marriage certificate? This will give her father's name and occupation which should help trace her in the census, otherwise it's just guesswork as to which is the correct Elizabeth Pennington and family. There seem to be a few of them around Lancashire ....

Hello Ruskie
No unfortunately I don't have her marriage certificate - she is actually the ancestor of an elderly aunt for whom I am doing a surprise family tree - I have quite a few threads going on this!!!
I was hoping I could get away with not buying the certificate - but as you say there are quite a few of them in the area......so maybe I should get it...... I'll order it later on today!
Thanks for your reply

According to the census entry for 1881, Elizabeth should have been born in Liverpool in 1841. There is an extracted christening for an Elizabeth Pinnington, St. Peter, Liverpool, 19 Jun/Aug 1841, daughter of James and Elizabeth.
If you examine the earlier censuses you may have an idea if this could be the one you seek.

Hello Ruskie and Beth
I was just going to order the certificate - and got Beth's message! I'll have a hunt in the censuses with James and Elizabeth......... you never know - but I think I might have to order the certificate to be 100 per cent sure - it would be a shame to give my Aunt the wrong ancestors
Many thanks again for your help

Hello Again
I've just had a go at the censuses - I can find Elizabeth with James and Elizabeth in 1861 - James is a Blacksmith and Elizabeth (daughter)is a Servant. (Class: RG9; Piece: 2738; Folio: 168; Page: 3;)
In 1851 Elizabeth is with mum Elizabeth, who is given as a Blacksmith's wife. (Class: HO107; Piece: 2182; Folio: 143; Page: 19;) - If these are same family, I can't find dad James in 1851.....
I've ordered the certificate - fingers crossed

I'm sure you've done the right thing by ordering the certificate - let us know who the dad is when you get it!

Hello ruskie
I saw him too - that's really what decided me I had to have the certificate...........My aunt phoned yesterday and I tried to ask a few questions without giving the game away, but I think she knows there's something going on! Anyway, she has no idea about her great-grandparents - especially that Elizabeth's husband was Canadian, so it should be quite a surprise for her!
Thanks again for your help
Tilly

Oh, how exciting!
I'll bet your aunt will be thrilled! Even if she's suspicious, she'll have no idea what you're going to dig up, so she'll still get a surprise!
It's nice of you to do this for her.

I think I've simply caught the geneaology bug - it's a bit like being a detective! I shall have to find another tree to do when I've finished mine - and my aunts......
The Canadian branch is quite interesting as her first husband was Canadian and she lived there for many years. She has told me about a story in the family which says that one of her ancestors went to Canada and married an "Indian Princess" - now, if I could find THAT!!!

Hello Red
Thank you for the message - that is very kind of you. I would be grateful for anything you can find
I have Elizabeth Pennington marrying Peter Harpell at Toxteth Park, St. John The Baptist Liverpool, registered in June 1863. (I have ordered the wedding certificate)
Beth gave me the following information :There is an extracted christening for an Elizabeth Pinnington, St. Peter, Liverpool, 19 Jun/Aug 1841, daughter of James and Elizabeth.
I have found, on IGI, a James Pennington married Elizabeth Peers 13 DEC 1818 Saint Peter Church Street, Liverpool, Lancashire, England - these could be Elizabeth's parents I suppose........
Also a James Pennington Christened in Liverpool 11 MAR 1800 St Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England - son of Joseph Pennington and Hannah Lunt.
(Peter Harpell might have been the son of Luke Harpell and Nancy Webber - but it's a big might!)
Of course, I am not one hundred percent sure about my findings......
(On Ancestry, there are two family trees giving the following info, but I think James and Elizabeth as parents seem a better fit : Elizabeth Pennington Birth1843 Garston, Liverpool, Lancashire. Father Charles Pennington (1820-) Mother Margaret Burrows (1818-)
The daughter Alice Harpell, who married John Jordan, was born in Wales.
I will keep my fingers firmly crossed that you are able to find something
thank you VERY much again
Tilly
