Hello fellow members,
I am researching my great grandfather's family. I know that he was born James McKenzie around 1811 in Falkirk. James married Jean Gray in Cumbernauld in 1839 where they raised their 8-10 children, including my grandfather, Robert McKenzie. according to James's death certificate of Nov of 1869 in Cumbernauld, it list his father as James also, mother unknown. They were stonecutters.

P.S. 1881 Only Robert and Jean (Mother) together at Muir's Land, Glasgow Road, Stirlingshire, Scotland. Jean noted as being born in Cadder, Lanarkshire and Robert is now a Stonedresser.

That's about all can be found, no luck tracing Jean Gray in Cadder, too many.
Have found a couple of Census's for son James, ages of family members vary from Census to Census, making them harder for you to trace, give found on James abt. 1844.

Thank you Dunmac for the census information on my McKenzie family line. I have in the past received the 1841-1881 census from different postings and I used to belong to the International Ancestry.com, and printed out some.
However, I didn't have the 1891 nor the 1901 census, listening my great Uncle John. By then my grandfather, Robert had immigrated to the States and his brother, David had left for New Zealand. I believe William was still there.
Is the 1911 census available yet? If I can look up anything in the States let me know.

Hi Dorothea,
I just joined RootsChat and found your posting very interesting. I am a great granddaughter of David Mckenzie who was a brother of your grandfather Robert McKenzie.
David married Margaret Watson in Condorrat in 1872. They had 13 children born in the Dunbartonshire/Stirlingshire area, 3 dying in infancy. Like their father David, all 7 sons worked in the mines. One of them was killed in a mining accident at Longcroft. The 3 surviving oldest sons emigrated to New Zealand in 1902 and settled & worked in the Ohai/Nightcaps coal mining area of Western Southland. The rest of the family followed in 1907 - David & Margaret and their 5 remaining children aged 11 - 25 (a teenage daughter had recently died of pnuemonia). Again all male members of the family worked in the mines. Three more sons were killed in mining accidents. My grandfather Alexander (Alec) was the youngest of the family. He subsequently founded some new coal seams and ended up having substantial shares and interests in the mining in that region. In 1924 he married Agnes Ferguson, who's family had emigrated from Stirlingshire in 1909. They had 3 children, my father James McKenzie was born in 1928.
My cousin has done some research and found the marriage record of James and Jean (Jane) Gray. He also identified Jean's parents as Robert Gray and Elizabeth Shanks. Like you we have only found James father (also James), not his mother. So I can't add any new information apart from the story of your great uncle David (my great grandfather).

I had traveled to Scotland and Cumbernauld in 2001 and visited my great grandparents grave but never took a photo of the grave and thought I had the right name of the cemetery and will now probably request a copy from the site. Thank you so much for sharing your McKenzie line from our great grandparents, James & Jean McKenzie and photo of David and his family. My dad Sylvanus looked a little bit like his uncle David, I can see a bit of us there as well. I wonder if your grandfather David looked like James? or his mom Jean?
