McKenzie's of Falkirk
« on: Tuesday 26 February 08 11:38 GMT (UK) »

Hello fellow members,

I am researching my great grandfather's family. I know that he was born James McKenzie around 1811 in Falkirk. James married Jean Gray in Cumbernauld in 1839 where they raised their 8-10 children, including my grandfather, Robert McKenzie. according to James's death certificate of Nov of 1869 in Cumbernauld, it list his father as James also, mother unknown. They were stonecutters.
Thank youfor any help with this brick wall.     Dorothea McKenzie   http://www.stonecuttersonline.org

Hi Granitelady,
                      Found 1861 Census:

Jean Gray, Wife, 45, Winder, Barony, Glasgow.
            Agnes McKenzie, Daur, 9, Cumbernauld.
James McKenzie, Head, 50, Ploughman, Falkirk.
            John McKenzie, Son, 1, Cumbernauld.
            Mary McKenzie, Daur, 4, Cumbernauld.
            Rob McKenzie, Son, 6, Cumbernauld.

495/, Cumbernauld Road. Cumbernauld, Dumbartonshire, Scotland.

                          1851:

           David, 1, at home, Cumb.
Elisabeth, 11, Hand Loom Weaver, Cumb.
James, Head, 40, Whinstone Quarrier, Cumb.
           James, 8, Scholar, Cumb.
Jean, Wife, 35, Weft Winder Cotton, Glasgow.
           Jean, 6, Scholar, Cumb.
           William, 4, at home, Cumb.

Condorrat, Cumbernauld, Dumbartonshire.

Hope these are of use in finding others in family.
                                                          Regards,
                                                                  Dunmac.
P.S.   1881 Only Robert and Jean (Mother) together at Muir's Land, Glasgow Road, Stirlingshire, Scotland. Jean noted as being born in Cadder, Lanarkshire and Robert is now a Stonedresser.

             1871 Census: Cumbernauld Road, Dumbartonshire.

David Love, Lodger, 21, Mineral Labourer, kirkintilloch.
Agnes McKenzie, Daughter, 12, Cotton Weaver, Cumbernauld.
David McKenzie, Son, 22, Mineral Labourer, Cumbernauld.
Jean McKenzie, Head, 53, Cotton Winder, Cadder, Lanarkshire.
John McKenzie, Son, 11, Scholar, Cumbernauld.

That's about all can be found, no luck tracing Jean Gray in Cadder, too many.
Have found a couple of Census's for son James, ages of family members vary from Census to Census, making them harder for you to trace, give found on James abt. 1844.

Catherine McKenzie, Daughter, 11, Scholar, Chryston, Lanarkshire.
James McKenzie, Head, 37, Carter, Cumbernauld, Dumbartonshire.
James McKenzie, Son, 9, Scholar, Chryston, Lanarkshire.
Jane McKenzie, Daughter, 6, Glasgow, Lanarkshire.
Jean McKenzie, Wife, 34, Cumbernauld, Dumb.
Walter P. McKenzie, Son, 3, Glasgow, Lan.

1891 Census: 137 Rose Street, Hutchesontown, Govan, Glasgow:

Helen McKenzie, Daughter, 3, Glasgow, Lan.
James    "     , Head, 45, Carter, Cumbernauld, Dumb.
             James    "     , Son, 19, Engineer's Apprentice, Chryston, Lan.
             Jane       "     , Wife, 43, Cumbernauld, Dumb.
             Jane       "     , Daughter, 16, Glasgow, Lan.
Lizzie     "     , Daughter, 7, Scholar, Glasgow, Lan.
Walter   "     , Son, 13, Scholar, Glasgow, Lan.

                                               Any Help?
                                                      Cheers,
                                                           Dunmac.
P.P.S. James 1811, on 1841 Census, Labourer, staying Mary's Square, Falkirk, not with his Family, Armour, McLood & Manro are others staying there.

Thank you Dunmac for the census information on my McKenzie family line. I have in the past received the 1841-1881 census from different postings and I used to belong to the International Ancestry.com, and printed out some.

However, I didn't have the 1891 nor the 1901 census, listening my great Uncle John. By then my grandfather, Robert had immigrated to the States and his brother, David had left for New Zealand. I believe William was still there.

Is the 1911 census available yet? If I can look up anything in the States let me know.

Thank you again and I hope you are feeling better now. Dorothea

Hi Dorothea,
1911 not available for another few years, give me details of USA lookup, might get something, can't make any promises. If you supply email in P.M. if I get any statside census's, I'll forward copies. Feeling much better now, thanks.
                                 Regards,
                                          Duncan.
