The baptism of Alice Storey Pattinson was 28 Oct 1838 in Pittington St. Lawrence d/o William and Mary.

There is a marriage of a William Patterson and Mary Beaney in Penshaw 10 Nov 1832  which is the closest to Houghton le Spring or Pittington.  I didn't see any William and Mary Pattinson or Pattison that looked in the right time frame and close in proximity.

Hi
Can we assume that you have checked the familysearch.org website?   Joanna's baptism is certainly on there.  Does she appear with the family in 1841?  The Story bit of Alice's name might be a clue to the ancestry on one side or another.
In 1841 all ages were generally rounded down to the nearest 5 so that might affect Mary's birth date.
There is an excellent index of marriages by George Bell - I think it is on the genuki site so that might be worth a look to see if you can find William and Mary or perhaps a Patterson/Story marriage.  I cannot remember what years it covers.

Thanks for the help....

I can't find the Alice Story Pattinson in the births index however, but there is an Alice Story Pattision born Durham in the Jul-Sep 1838 index.... maybe this could be her, although spelling seems strange if it is.

Johanna was not with the family at sherburn in the 1841 census, however i have found a Johanna at same age living with an elderly couple in their 60's ( maybe grandparents ) close to Felling.

I would think that birth is bound to be the right one.  The combination of Alice Story is so unusual.  If you want to get it try ordering it from the local office and usually they will check it and they will not charge if it is not a child of William and Mary.  Same price as the GRO.  That will give you Mary's maiden name.

Can anyone help with finding who William Patterson (1810) father was, here's details I have on him from census:

1841 census Sherburn, Sherburn Hill Village, 'Sherburn Hill'
 William Patterson, 30, Blacksmith
 Mary Patterson, 30
 Alice Patterson, 2

1841 Census, Heworth, Holly Hill
 George Patterson, 60, Countryman (?), Y
 Hannah Patterson, 60, Y
 Johanna Patterson, 7, Y
 Hannah Patterson, 6, Y

Sherburn 1851 Census, Sherburn Hill Village
William Patterson, Head, married, 41, Blacksmith, born Felling Shore, County Durham
Mary Patterson, Wife, married, 41, born Newbottle, County Durham
Johanna Patterson, daughter, 17, Milliner, born Houghton-le-Spring, County Durham
Alice Storey Patterson, daughter, 12, Scholar, born Sherburn Hill, County Durham

Is the George Patterson in the 1841 census his father or uncle maybe as he is living near to felling shore where William claims to have been born on 1851 census, and also it appears that Williams daughter Johanna is living there too?

I found this also, which could explain the 'Storey' name given to Williams daughter Alice maybe:
5 Apr 1812 William Pattison, of Fellside, born 5-Feb 1812, illegitimate son of Richard Storey (husbandman) by Ann Pattison (single woman)

Anyone help make sense of this?

Cheers Ed.
