Barksdale Land Grant
« on: Tuesday 26 February 08 15:52 GMT (UK) »

In 1332 the Lord of the Manor of Bramley granted land in Bramley to Thomas de Barksdale and Elizabeth, his wife, for life. Is there any way to find out why the land grant? Also, in 1396 I understand there was a tenement and land in the Parish of Bramley, Hampshire, which was called Barkesdale. Would appreciate any info on this. Thank you. Danny Barksdale Athens,AL USA

Hi Danny,

Welcome to RootsChat.  Smiley

This is way back and I suspect that the people who may best be able to assist you are the archivists at the Hampshire Record Office in Winchester.  I have checked their catalogues but there is nothing which dates to the 14th century.  The Victoria History of Hampshire is also less than helpful, only telling me that there is a property named Barkesdale in the parish of Bramley.

Where did you find out about the grant?

Nell

Hi Nell, Thank you for your kind reply. I found out about the grant from a book published in 1948 by John Barksdale, "Barksdale Family History and Genealogy". Are there many Barksdales in England now? Thanks, Danny

According to one surname listing site, only 9.  In 1881, none seem to be listed.  Sad
