Leighton Buzzard - BEEBY
« on: Tuesday 26 February 08 22:52 GMT (UK) »

Am trying to identify George Berry BEEBY, birth registered 1844/March qtr Leighton Buzzard.

Is he my George Stephenson Berry BEEBY, born 1844, who married in South Australia in 1866?

I have had no luck trying to trace him in 1851 UK Census.  His mother may have been Margaret nee MELVIN.

Can anyone please help?

Hi Jill

I have had a look at the GRO image and he is just entered as George Berry Beeby - no mention of a Stephenson.

Do Australian marriage certs show both parents names?

Thanks Carole.  I too checked out GRO image and no, early SA marriage certificates do not provide parents.  His mother would appear to be Margaret, unless she was an aunt or "adoptive" mother.  No records here provide further info.  Jill

P.S. Love your feline.

Don't forget that Leighton Buzzard registration district also covered quite a lot of parishes in Buckinghamshire, including Linslade.

If you check FreeBMD for Beeby entries in Leighton Buzzard district 1837-51 there are very few, starting with a marriage in June 1841 of John Beeby where one of the other parties was Hannah Lines.

In the June 1841 census in Linslade Bucks was John Beeby 40, Hannah 25; Lucy 15; Ellen 15; Mary 13; Sarah 11.

In 1851 in Luton Beds was Lucy head 28; Ellen sister 27; Mary sister 23; Sarah sister 20; Rhoda 3 sister. All bar Rhoda who was born in Linslade were born in Atherstone Warwickshire

So it's the same family. Rhoda was registered as Rhoda Lines Beeby which ties her in with the 1841 marriage, and I imagine that George Berry was also a son of John and Hannah.

There are baptisms on the IGI at Atherstone of John, Mary and Sarah, the last two tying up with the census ages, with parents John and Lucy. A Lucy Beeby age 39 was buried at Sibson, Leics on 25 Jan 1836, but this might be a complete red herring.

The big question is: where were John and son George in 1851, plus the other assumed sons? I can't find them. Did all the males go to Australia leaving the daughters behind?

I'm not sure where the Berry came from in George's name. Hannah Lines appears to have been the daughter of Augustus Lines and Jane Duncombe which explains the middle names of three of the other children born 1841-46.

The 1847 death of Hannah Beeby looks as though it was Hannah (Lines), although it would take the death cert to prove it, in which case John could have remarried - might the Margaret you mention have been his third wife?

Wondered where you'd got to Tazzie.

Good find. Blowed if I can make it out - having to blow the cobwebs off my CDrom set, which is also pretty faint, but it does confirm what you said.

Need to revisit my theory that Hannah died in 1847 and that John remarried Margaret! Can't find a burial/death of John though.

Interestingly in Luton there's a burial of Rhoda Lines Beeby age 4 on 23 Aug 1851 at Luton St Mary, and a Margaret Berry Beeby age 1+ on 15 May 1850 also at Luton. There are a few Beeby's in Luton from 1849 onwards on FreeBMD. Was Margaret Berry Beeby the daughter of John and Hannah?

   Hi David ....

In Warwickshire Mancetter I have found

Ellen Walker Beeby bap 6 April 1825
Lucy Elizabeth Beeby bap 14 April 1822

  Father John Beeby
  mother Lucy Beeby

Lucy Elizabeth Beeby b @ 1822 is still unmarried when she dies in 1897 Luton.

Would a South Australia death cert hold more details on parents?

   Found her ..... Smiley

advert from The Bedford Mercury  front page....

Chealsea House Seminary, Leighton Buzzard Mrs Beeby (formerly Miss Lines), in returning thanks to her Friends for their long and continued patronage, begs to inform them and the Public, that her House, Play Ground and Garden, being both spacious and airy, are replete with every convenience. Neither pains nor expense will be spared to combine the comforts of a private family with every advantage of a large establishment, which is now conducted upon the modern and improved principle of instruction, which from the excitement of emulation, changes the aquisition of knowledge from a toil to a pleasure, and quickens the intellect, whilst the memory is being stored with a sound as well as an accomplished education. The terms are regulated by fairness and moderation and calculated to meet the views of most.

Thanks for all efforts but I seem no closer to discovering whether George Berry BEEBY born 1844 in Leighton Buzzard BDF is the same as my man, George Stephenson Berry BEEBY who married in Sth Australia (SA) in 1866 aged (22).

I originally felt he was not the same man as his mother (?) Margaret appears to be with him in SA and also a sister called Margaret and a brother, John.  The last two both died of mental illness and my George was so distraught that he might meet the same end that he did not want children of his own and ended committing suicide.  Very sad.

To further complicate matters, there is another (Sir) George Stephenson BEEBY (1869-1942) born and bred in  New South Wales, Australia, the son of Edward Augustus BEEBY who, himself, is the son of John and Hannah nee LINES.  E.A. BEEBY was born in 1842 and died in NSW in 1878, having married there in 1865.  This particular family has no (apparent) connection to my G.S.B. BEEBY.

However, I am still to be convinced that there is no connection and for this reason I have pursued the John BEEBY family and wonder whether my George is in fact a son of John (Jnr)?  It is likely that John (Jnr) emigrated to Australia - perhaps he was a seaman? - and this may have been the impetus needed for a young Edward Augustus to follow suit.  Hence if there is anyone out there who can add anything to the following research, please feel free.

BEEBY John, born c1801, married (1) Lucy

Issue:

1.  Lucy Elizabeth, born c1822 Atherstone WAR, died 1897 (75) Luton BDF
- Lucy was a schoolmistress who ran the school known as "Grove House" in the High Street, Dunstable BDF until (in retirement) she ran a boarding house for genteel persons in Eastbourne SSX: Lucy never married [Census 91].

2.  Ellen Walker, born 1824 Atherstone WAR
- Ellen married 1853 St Marys, Luton BDF to William Reynolds FERNELEY
Q - did they emigrate?

3.  John (Jnr), born 1826 Atherstone WAR
Q - did he emigrate to Australia? Is he the father of my G.S.B. BEEBY?

4.  Mary, born c1828 Atherstone WAR
- Mary was married and widowed by 1861: her son, Frederick George PAINTER was born 1856 Luton BDF. Mary taught with her sister at Grove House [Census 71,81]
Q - did Mary and Frederick emigrate?

5.  Sarah Anne, born 1830 Atherstone WAR
- Sarah never married and worked with her sister at Grove House and as a boardinghouse keeper.  After Lucy's death, Sarah lived in retirement in a Ladies Lodge in Dunstable BDF. [Census 01]

BEEBY John, born c1801, a merchant, married (2) Hannah LINES in 1841 at Leighton Buzzard BDF.
- Hannah LINES, the daughter of Augustus LINES and Jane nee DUNCOMBE, was a Schoolmistress who was conducting a school in Newtown, Linslade BKS shortly after her marriage. In widowhood Hannah was still teaching [Census 51]

Issue:

6.  Jane Duncombe, born 1841, died 1841 Leighton Buzzard BDF

7.  Edward Augustus, born 1842 Leighton Buzzard BDF, died 1878 NSW
- Edward emigrated to NSW Australia by 1865 when he married in Sydney NSW.
Q - is Edward on Census 51?  Parts are so faint it is difficult to ascertain.

8.  George Berry, born 1844 Leighton Buzzard BDF
Q - is he the same man who married in South Australia in 1866 as George Stephenson Berry BEEBY?  If anyone has any further information I would very much like to hear.

9.  Hannah Duncombe, born 1845, and poss died 1847 Leighton Buzzard BDF

X.  William Duncombe, born 1846, died 1846 Leighton Buzzard BDF

A.  Rhoda Lines, born 1847 Leighton Buzzard BDF, died 1851 [IGI]

B.  Margaret Berry, born 1849 Luton BDF, died 1850 Luton BDF

C.  Frances Harrison, born 1850 Luton BDF
- Frances is with her mother in Census 51.

Please note that I have been unable to consult Parish registers to confirm the above - should anyone be able to do so, it may be of interest to the Local studies people at Luton or Leighton Buzzard.

With thanks,

Jill Statton, OAM

It's always best when making a request to give too much information, rather than the opposite. It saves people wasting their time looking for detail that you already have.

I don't think the answer to your question will be found in England. If he was the son of John jnr then he was possibly born in Australia, but John would only have been 18 which is a bit young - have you found a marriage for a John Beeby in Oz?

I don't believe in coincidences and George Berry Beeby born 1844 and George Stephenson Berry Beeeby born 1844 looks too much of a coincidence for there not to be a close connection, either that they are the same person, or that they are closely related. In any event I doubt whether you will be able to prove conclusively that they are the same person (other than from Australian records) but you might be able to show that they are not eg by finding a birth in Oz or by finding George in a census in England in 1871 or later, or in UK BMD records
