1891 Look up please - Charles Tilbrook - Completed with many thanks!
« on: Wednesday 27 February 08 10:38 GMT (UK) »

I wonder if anyone would kindly look up Charles Tilbrook on the 1891/1901 census returns please.

In 1881 he looked like this:

Charles TILBROOK Head M Male 24 Aldershot Engine Fitters Labourer
Louiza TILBROOK Wife M Female 32 Kildare, Ireland.

Living at 18 1/2 Bradford Sreet, Attercliffe Cum Darnall, Sheffield.

Charles was still around in 1901, but unfortunately, wife Louiza passed away in July 1900.

I believe that Charles might have been listed as being born in Ireland on earlier returns, so this might be a difficult one.  I do know that both Charles and Lousia died in Sheffield, I would have expected to find them in Attercliffe cum Darnall.

Thanks to all!

Helen

Hi Tati,

I didn't know of any children, so this is all extra information.  Brilliant!

The occupation definitely rings a bell, and I had originally believed Charles to be born in Fermoy, so it's all looking very positive.  The address is in the same part of Sheffield.

Again,  thank you for your time.

Well - in 1901 I found Charles aged 42 Wid. Gas Producer b. Sheffield, Lodger, two children Joseph aged 14 and Lizzia aged 8, but I can't find them in 1891.  In 1901 they are in Attercliffe cum Darnall  :RG13. P. 4387 Fol 143 Pg 3.

Having read Tati's family - which I also saw and put on one side to look for 1901 confirmation - now I don't know !  We know Louisa died before the 1901 - but the children aren't the same!

Hi there, Mum44,

Thanks for your help.

When Charles died in 1930, aged 70, his occupation on the burials was 'gas maker'.  So it looks likely that the 1901 return could be correct, but this time his place of birth is Sheffield!

The older children listed in 1891 might have left home by 1901, but that still leaves Annie, for which I can find no burial at the local cemeteries.

Lizzie, who appears in 1901 would not have been born in 1891, so her appearance in 1901 doesn't have to be an issue.  I wonder, did you (or Tati, or anyone else who would like to join in......) notice Joseph who would have been around 4 years old appear on the 1891 return?

Thanks for sticking with me on this!

I've searched for Joseph in 1891 and can't find him anywhere. Same with Elizabeth in 1901!  Huh

Hi -

I couldn't find Joseph either - which was why I took so long on the first post - wanted to cross-check, but can't see him.

How odd!

I did say I thought it might be a difficult one, and that's when Charles birthplace was Fermoy or Aldershot!  Now we can add Sheffield into the mix!

Thank you to you both for thoroughly checking this out for me!  The family had military connections and they did travel around a fair bit (one cousin was even born in Hong Kong!).  But I do know they ended up in Sheffield.

I think it (might) be a safe bet to assume they are the same family.  The grandparents, William and Mary Tilbrook always had grandchildren living at their address with them throughout the crs, so I know extended family cared for younger members, which might explain Joseph's absence in 1891.

Thanks again to you both!

Ooops, sorry to be a pain, did you notice the address of the family on the 1901 return.  In 1899 I have Louisa's address as 5 Carbrook Place.

I'VE HAD A BREAKTHOUGH!!! Annie and Emily on the 1891 cr are with Aunty Margaret in 1901, who was by then married to Soloman and was Margaret Baker, so it does all cross refer, they were at 24 Edward Road, same part of Sheffield.

Thanks again!

Well, it's 52 for sure, and the road name is either Polacs or Blacs (I think  Grin)  Attercliffe cum Darnall.

The ref: is RG13. P. 4387 Fol. 143 Pg 3.

They are boarding in the home of Emily Carr.

Hi there,

Thanks for checking the address.

I've just checked on Ancestry marriages, Charles married Emily Corr in 1901, and her burial is listed in the pages I have of the local cemetery.  She died in 1919, so they had a good few years together.  It really is all tying in nicely.

Thanks again!

Well, I looked again and it is Corr, nor Carr  Grin

In that case - here is the whole household in 1901:

Emily Corr   Head  Wid  46   B. Birmingham, Warwickshire
Harold Corr  Son  15   Iron rolling millhand  B. Birmingham, Warwickshire
Frank    ~       ~    13   Labourer (coke washing)    ~              ~
Charles Tillbrook  Boarder  Wid  42   Gas Producer  B. Yorkshire Sheffield
Joseph     ~            ~         14  Labourer (coke washing)   ~           ~
Lizzie       ~            ~          8                                              ~            ~

I haven't seen the original, but could it be Blaco Road?

This was a short street, parallel with Attercliffe Common, running from Amberley Road to Carbrook Park, intersecting with Berkeley Road and Belmoor Road. It was where the Don Valley Bowl is now.

In fact Mrs Emily CORR is listed at 52 Blaco Road in White's 1901 Directory of Sheffield (online at http://www.historicaldirectories.org)

Hi Hugh,

That extra information has rounded this little expedition off rather nicely.

Again, thanks to everyone!
