PRATER pre 1598 ?
« on: Wednesday 27 February 08 11:24 GMT (UK) »

Does anyone have a record of a Cornish Prater pre- 1598 ?

I  am trying to connect the Wiltshire/ Somerset Prater family with my Cornish/ Swansea Prater family.

The earliest Prater I have in Cornwall ( St Newlyn East) is William, born about 1598 and  said to be the son of Richard Prater and Margaret Ashfield of Latton Manor Wiltshire.  If there are earlier Praters born and bred in Cornwall then it is possible he is son of one of those families and not from Wiltshire at all.   Undecided

well done for getting back so far i can't see any early that mid 1600's in Cornwall
(1642, 1669)
however there are some pedigree resource files on Familysearch.org which go back to 1390 with the birth in France then coming over to the Uk (Wiltshire to marry in 1420)
i amnot sure how reliable this info is as its obviously submitted but the submitter has given contact details

Hi Toni...the Prater family is pretty well researched and there are lots of them, related to the great and good, and going back to goodness knows when in Wiltshire and Somerset and even, apparently, to Normandy and Austria.

I can get my particular Praters back to William in Cornwall BUT , I can't make a satisfactory link to the Wiltshire family. There are several researchers who say it exists but no-one seems to have the actual proof.

My thinking was that, if there are Praters in Cornwall pre the birth of William then perhaps he is one of them and the Wiltshire branch did not come to Cornwall at all.

Hi
i got your line of thought but i couldnt see any earlier than the 1600 dates i listed, on IGI you have to put in a first name or the batch number,
i don't have time to go through very batch number for Cornwall as i am at work
and i didnt want to put in a  first name as we don't know what the name will be!
I didn't search soundexs

Hi Grizzly,

William does not appear to have married in Newlyn East. The earliest baptism I have located in Newlyn East is 1623. Hope you spoken to the other Prater researchers to this board.  From the Wiltshire Board I see you have made contact with junket.  Wink

Do you know William's Will is online?

http://west-penwith.org.uk/probate/cro13.htm

As to earlier mentions of the name Prater, I see a three earlier marriages elsewhere in Cornwall, nowhere near Newlyn East

Frannces PRATER (Male) = Johan TWIGE St Thomas by Launceston 28 Apr 1568
Rychard PRATER = Agnes HEYE 18 Nov 1581 Callington
Walter PRATER = Sibly MARTIN 1 Oct 1586 Stoke Climsland

junket has posted (unsuccessfully) to locate any possible children to these unions. They are the only refs I have found to the name Prater anywhere in Cornwall prior to 1623

Hi

I have taken a break, from these Praters and have been working on 2 of the other nightmare P surnames, but found something intereating today, whilst researching the other Ps.

I have to look into this further and will contact you grizzly.
