James Varney born Mentmore Bucks 1839 is missing from the family on 1891 census. His wife Louisa is at home with 4 children, Sandridge, Herts. Louisa states that she is Head and married whereas on the 1901 Louisa states that she is Head and a widow. Can anyone find James please,
Carol

Hi Carol
I am struggling to find him in 91 I'm afraid, though perhaps others may have more luck.
However, I note that no children were born to the couple between 1881 and 1891, so perhaps Louisa was already a widow in 1891 and the enumerator made a mistake?
I cannot find a suitable burial for James on the Herts Burial Index or a death on FreeBMD but it might be worth searching the complete GRO indexes for deaths between those dates.

Hi Rick
That's a good point, no children born to James and Louisa after 1880. As Louisa was only 36 in 1881 I would have thought possible a few more children born to the couple. On their youngest childs marriage cert.for 1900 father listed as James , Railway Guard, doesn't say deceased, but I have come across a father being mentioned without the word deceased when in fact he had died some years previously.
Thanks for your help.
Carol
