Bristol - Hunt and Burt Family
« on: Thursday 28 February 08 04:35 GMT (UK) »

Hello,
I am new at this and think I may have posted my message in the wrong section. Sorry for any hassles.
I am trying to find information on George Hunt, born 1844 in Bristol. I know that he married in 1872 in Australia, but do not have much information on the in between dates.
I believe his fathers name was Joseph and mothers name was Elizabeth, maiden name Burt, but that is all I can find. I am looking for a confirmation of his birth in bristol, and whether there was any more siblings. Basically any information would be great.
Thanks,
janez

Hello jane -and welcome to RootsChat.

Just a little tip!
Could you edit your posts to say you have posted same topic on
Gloucester Look Up requests
Gloucester Look Up Offers (deleted - it isn't an offer anyway!)
Beginners (Link posted by Moderator)
That will save RootsChatters from doing duplicate lookups.
Don't worry about it - you've found this friendly site and hopefully we will be able to help you.

There are birth registrations in Bristol District
George Hunt Mar qtr 1843
Stephen george Hunt Jun qtr 1844
George Hunt Jun qtr 1846

I have looked through the census and can only find a george Hunt of correct age with parents Joseph/Elizabeth born and living in Lincolnshire

There is a George Hunt b.c. 1843 b. Bisley Gloucester who in 1851 is a lodger with a lot of servants -in 1861 he is age 18 and described as an orphan - but I think he is on 1881 census married with children.

What source did you get his d.o.b. and parents from?

What are the details of Joseph Hunt and Elizabeth Burt's marriage?

Maybe we can help from there

Thanks for your reply.
Will get on to the editing straight away.
I have located the death certificate of George Hunt. It states that his fathers name was infact George, not Joseph, as I was previously informed.
So his parents were George and Elizabeth.
I also found a death certificate for an Elizabeth Hunt, who was born in Bristol, died in Victoria, Australia, and her parents were John and SarahBurt. She died in 1866 aged 65 years. I am unabel to confirm this to be George's mum, but there is no mention of a husband, so I am wondering if George Senior died in England, and she migrated with her child/children??
This is pretty much all I have. Hope you can help,
Regards,
jane

Hi Jane

It would help if you could tell us what evidence you have so far - like marriage documents, immigration records etc?

Bear in mind that death certificate information is provided by someone other than the person who has died, so cannot always be relied on.

I  also have BURTs in Bedminster (technically Somerset, but part of Bristol).  It would be good to find a link!

kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

I have found in 1841 (remember adults over the age of 15 -ages are rounded down to nearest 5 years )
1841
Bristol
George Hunt 20 labourer
Elizabeth 20
George 1mth
all b in county
HO107 378 10 29

and
1841
Maryleprt st
Bristol
George Hunt 40 tea dealer no
Elizabeth 35 no
Clara 8 yes
Sarah 6 yes
HO107 374 28 6

I cannot find either of these families in 1851

George age 1mth is a little young to be your George

maybe the second family had George and emigrated before 1851 census.
But it does state parents george and Elizabeth not b. in county -so maybe they could be from Somerset -only a guess though

George's marriage cert should show his father's occupation?

Trying to find a george Hunt marriage to an Elizabeth

There is reg Bristol 1840 a marriage of George hunt and on same page is Elizabeth grimes
But if it was the second couple their marriage would have been pre registration which began (but wasn't compulsory at first) in Sept qtr 1837

Hi,
I am in the process of contacting the church in Lockwood where George and Elizabeth were married, and hoping this may help.
I really have no other inforamtion at this time, as the trail seems to go cold on these two!
I know a cousin is also researching the family tree, and hope to contact her to see if she has any information that I don't.
I will let you know if I find out more.
Thanks,
Jane
