CORNISH and HAMILTON in Pennsylvania
« on: Thursday 28 February 08 12:52 GMT (UK) »

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone could help regards this family which emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1887...

William Nicholas CORNISH, son of John CORNISH and Ann KNIGHT, was born on 10 January 1858 in Ridgeway, Plympton St Mary, Devon.  He appeared in the census on 7 April 1861 in Plympton, Devon, England.  He appeared in the census on 2 April 1871 in Murton, Durham, England.  On 2 April 1871 he was a Coal Miner in Murton.  He married Mary MILLER in 1878.  Mary Died 1881. He appeared in the census on 3 April 1881 in 48 Tunstall Street, Ryhope, Durham, England.  On 3 April 1881 he was a Coal Miner in Ryhope.  On 12 December 1882 he was a Miner in 11 Garrick Street.  He married Margaret HAMILTON on 12 December 1882 in The Parish Church, Hendon, Sunderland, Durham in presence of George DALE and Lancelot HAMILTON.  He emigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from Liverpool, England on 25 July 1887.  (returned to UK sometime between 1887-1901 with daughter Isabella).  On 31 March 1901 he was a Coal Miner, Hewer in Ryhope.  He and Mary CARR appeared in the census on 31 March 1901 in 53 Tunstall Street, Ryhope, Durham.  He married Mary Carr in 1901.

Margaret HAMILTON, daughter of Lancelot HAMILTON and Mary SMITH, was born in 1863 in South Hetton, Durham.  She appeared in the census on 2 April 1871 in Ludworth, Durham.  She married George MILLION on 1 March 1880 in The Register Office, Willington, Durham in the presence of Lancelot HAMILTON and Thomas SPEDDING.  They appeared in the census on 3 April 1881 in 10 Stewart Street West, New Tunstall, Durham.  She emigrated to Philadelphia from Liverpool on 12 December 1887. (can't find her after 1887)

William Nicholas CORNISH and Margaret HAMILTON had the following children:

Margaret CORNISH (1885- ).   Margaret was born in 1885.  She emigrated to Philadelphia from Liverpool on 12 December 1887. (can't find her after 1887)
Isabella CORNISH (1887-1964).  Isabella was born in 1887 in Hebburn, Durham.  She emigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from Liverpool, England on 12 December 1887.  She appeared in the census on 31 March 1901 in 53 Tunstall Street.  In 1964 she was resident in 11 Thorntree Gill, Peterlee, Durham.  She died of Ia. Cerebral Thrombosis  II Arteriosclerotic cerebral and heart disease on 24 August 1964 in General Hospital, Sunderland.

.....from old stories from my grandmother, the Margaret Cornish wife of William Cornish committed suicide whilst in Pennsylvania and this was why William and his daughter Isabella returned to the UK without her.  Their other daughter Margeret Cornish stayed out in Pennsylvania however and settled there.

Do you think she died in Philadelphia? The family isn't in the 1900 census, which means William would have left a 14- or 15-year-old girl behind and that seems odd. I can only think if she stayed it would be to marry and then it would be very hard to find her with a married name. Unfortunately, there is no 1890 census to speak of.

Hi,

my grandmothers cousin had some pictures of a US airman called Bill Hamilton taken around 1940 who is apparently a relation and used to keep in touch, but she lost contact years ago with my grandmother, and my grandmother doesn't know much about the relatives in the states.
I have a copy of the photographs, but no other details.  I wonder if margaret Cornish had brothers who went out to pennsylvania with them and maybe young margaret stayed out there with them.

Ed,

I am not sure where to go from here with this one. I had a bit of a search for a Bill Hamilton, but with no other info, it's hard to pinpoint that. If your grandmother kept in touch, do you think there are any letters hanging around that he wrote? Another thing is to post on a couple boards, genforum and rootsweb maybe, looking for any possible descendants of Margaret's, if she had survived.

Hi,

Where would be a good place to look for the death of Margaret Cornish between 1887 and 1901 in Pittsburgh or the Pennsylvania area...

If my grandmother's story that was passed on down the line is correct, then Margaret committed suicide in the states before her husband William came back over to the UK.

Stories get obscured over time but there maybe something in it.

Do you think it was Pittsburgh or Philadelphia? I would contact the library first.

Philly  http://www.library.phila.gov/

Pitt  http://www.clpgh.org/

You might have to pay a small fee because you don't know an exact date, but they are usually very minimal. And libraries these days have so much searchable. I requested an obit for my grandfather from 1941 from the local library, and they sent me his obit, an accident that happened a year before, his mother's obituary and two articles from 1991 mentioning my grandfather's house, so somehow, they could search on his name. And I wasn't charged a thing for all of that. I think that's the best place to start. You could also ask them to check directories. I just checked the 1890 Philly city directories and he's not in it.
