Edmonton Union Workhouse
« on: Thursday 28 February 08 13:31 GMT (UK) »

Can anyone help me with Gt Grandmother ELLEN SIMMONS she is recorded as being in Edmonton Union Workhouse in  March 1902 and also as being a Sewing machinist of Tottenham Parish.  I cannot find any other information.  If anyone has any information or can trace her from the 1901 census I will be very grateful.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Could you tell us how old Ellen is shown as in 1902?  Was she born in Middlesex?

Do you know if she was married/widowed in 1902

There is a 1901 entry for an Ellen Simmons dressmaker aged 21 b Chelmsford living with parents Thomas & Mary A in M'sex

Hi Carol,
Thankyou for your quick response.

Sorry, the only details I have are as posted _ they are as stated on her
daughter`s birth certificate.

Hi

So we can assume she was reasonably young to have had a child in 1902

There are too many 1901 entries for Ellen Simmons to know which was the right entry so we have a couple of possible options:

Was the child adopted - if yes - go to the question about the Workhouse records?

If no - did she remain with Ellen and did Ellen later marry?

Who did she marry?

If she never married - what year did she die as we can get her age at death from the GRO index

The Workhouse records should still be available and should (hopefully) show her age and may have next of kin etc details

Hi

Most unlikely that they would be online.  Have a look at this link and I think the records are held at the address below

Hi Carol,

Do you have the rest of the 1901 Census details for Ellen`s parents
Thomas and Mary A SIMMONS.  If you have I would be very grateful.
I have been unable to locate them on the 1881 Census (LDS Site).

Hi Dovecote

Have you made contact with the London Meropolitan Archives yet?

I'm planning a visit for either 7th or 14th April and will add this to my list of look-ups if you want.

Hi Dawn,
Thankyou for your offer I would be very grateful if you have the time
for  ANY  information you could find out.

The facts I have are that Ellen SIMMONS was in THe Union Workhouse
Edmonton in March 1902 when she gave birth to a daughter. (Verified
on her daughters birth certificate.)

CarolW  kindly gave me the info that ELLEN SIMMONS was living at home on the
1901 census so admission to the Workhouse was obviously
between these dates.  I  would like to discover when and whether Ellen SIMMONS
was discharged with her daughter or if the child was given up before
leaving the Workhouse. (If the child was given up before who was she given too?)

I realise that the above request  may be time consuming  so please don`t
spend too much of your time looking.

Thankyou again,
Dovecote.

Hi Dovecote

From the Creed Register - microfilm X104/230

The page is actually printed in a landscape format which won't fit across here so I've written it up in a portrait style and hope you understand.

Date of Entry: (blank)
Name, Christian & Surname: Simmonds, Ellen
Age: 21
From where admitted: Tottenham
When born: 1880
Name of Informant: Self
Name of Paupers nearest relative or friend: Rowland Brockwill (step brother) Boys Home
(There was more written here but it was too small and I didn't have time to find out if the register could be ordered and viewed)
Date of Admission: 14 Oct 01
Date of Discharge: 2 June 02

Just to add, in 1901 census Roland Brockwell appears to be an 'inmate' in an institution in Farnborough.

I'll be going to the LMA again in a couple of weeks, I'll take this with me again and see if there is any more to add.

Hi Dawnsh,

Thankyou so much for the information, it appears that Ellen was
probably disowned by her parents.  Wasn`t expecting to  hear of
a step brother! This family are certainly springing  a few surprises.

Thankyou again I really appreciate your time and effort.
