Prison Records
« on: Thursday 28 February 08 14:32 GMT (UK) »

How do I obtain 1929/1930 prison records?  I am looking for Charles Richard EASTOE.

Charles R. EASTOE may have been incarcerated somewhere in Cornwall.  There is a short article printed August 26, 1930 in the London Gazette that Mr. EASTOE was convicted of the Civil Power and deprived of his rank in July 7, 1930.

We know his partner went to Launceston Cornwall (Pages Cross House) to have their child on July 3, 1930.  We suspect since there was no family, that his partner went to Launceston to be near Charles Eastoe.   How can I get records of Mr. Eastoe's conviction?

Hi jdowsett and welcome to RootsChat !  Smiley

Looks like you have been looking for this man for some time ! .... what else have you found out about him ? sounds like he was a soldier so I'm wondering if this may be the same man .... my apologies if it isn't !! you may want to try and find out about this soldier ..... may be easier to find the soldier than prison records ! might also be worth posting on our Armed Forces board ....  !!

I checked the Times and the Guardian for reports of the case as well as Black Sheep and Google Books but found nothing.

A lawyer might be able to track down the case in the Law Reports for 1929/30

mmmm !

Maybe the best thing would be to get his service record ..... you never know there may be something in there ! if there was a court martial or something ... don't you think ?

I found the same articles and medical card.   I have been researching this family line for quite some time and when I'm not hitting brick walls, I find a few of skeletons in the closet.  What fun!   Grin    I absolutely adore mysteries...

I was thinking that there may have been more articles in newspapers, but I'm in the US and can't find anything online other than the London Gazette.    I have information about his birth, marriage, two families, and his death.  At the moment, I'm stuck in 1930 trying to find out about his conviction.

Does anyone know what it means to be convicted by the Civil Power?  Could he have still been in the military in 1930 to have been stripped of his rank?  Or could he have been a civilian?

Thanks a bunch for all your help!

He was probably a civilian - the Gazette item says "formerly 5th Bn Norfolk R".

"A retired officer will forfeit his rank and status after conviction by a civil power where said conviction results in a custodial sentence"

The "civil power" means the normal civil judiciary system as opposed to military court-martial.
