Could someone please let me have census transcriptions for Ramon and Muriel Minnie de BERTODANO LOPEZ and their son William between 1900 and 1930?
Their names have been distorted or mistranscribed in the index as follows:
1900 Alameda CA (R E and Minie DELOPEZ); 1910 San Francisco CA (Lawon and Frund BUTADANO); 1920 Marin Co CA (Ramon and Muriel DEBERTSDANO); 1930 Contra Costa CA (William, Jessie and Donald L De BERTODANS).
Any help with this family would be very welcome.
Thank you
Philip Candy

Many thanks for these lookups.
It seems as if the surnames aren't the only thing to be messed up by the census enumerator(!) but between these two entries, there is quite a lot of useful information.
I would be really grateful if you could please do the other two lookups when you have time.
Thanks very much indeed.
Yours sincerely

Many thanks for this additional information.
It all adds to the story and allows me to piece together the family's history. For insatnce, the nephew Jack Abercrombie would be a son of Muriel's brother; her maiden name was Abercrombie.
I don't know if there's any chance of finding William and Jessie in the 1920 Census along with Donald who would have been about 6 years old? I have tried without success, but they could be in Missouri, where he claimed to be born, or in California, or back in Australia, visiting his mother's parents, or indeed somewhere else entirely.
In any case, thanks a lot for the help, I really appreciate your time and effort.
Kind regards

The 1906 trip Cheryl mentioned shows up on Ancestry, so I can get it if you need it.
I tried looking in 1920, but no luck. Do you think William and Jessie were together as of 1920? Based on the info in 1930, I would think Jessie was married before & Donald had a different father.

Many thanks for this. You are of course right - it looks as if William only married in about 1928 or thereabouts.
In answer to your kind offer, I would be grateful for any information from the shipping records.
Setting aside errors in transcription (!), members of this family alternated between the surname de Bertodano (or Debertodano) and Lopez, since the original family name in Spain was De Bertodano y Lopez..
Therefore would you mind seeing what you can turn up in the 'California Passenger and Crew Lists, 1893-1957' under the following names:
William C De B Lopez W C De B Lopez Ramon Edward Debertodano Muriel M Dbertodano Ramon Edward De Bertodano Ramon De Bertodano E De Bertodano Muriel Bertodano Muriel Minnie De Bertodano Muriel Brtodans
Overall, there seem to be quite a few references to this family hiding under a range of differing spellings of the surname.
Many thanks for your help.
Kind regards

Many thanks for these lookups. I can't tell if you've managed to find them all, but there is plenty of information here to fill in gaps in my knowledge.
In particular, the fact that William was a miner in Panama helps to explain why he is so difficult to locate in various censuses, and it is also interesting to have Muriel's actual place of birth and her brother's name.
Now all I have to do is to find an Obituary for Ramon when he died in January 1931!
Many thanks for your help.
Kind regards
