Oxfordshire Deaths
« on: Thursday 28 February 08 20:37 GMT (UK) »

Hi

I am looking for a death in Oxford post 1969.  I can not seem to find it in ancestory or findmypast or anywhere else for that matter.  Any ideas on where to look next.   I suspect he was buried at Wolvercote as he lived in Summertown.  I am looking from dates 1969 to 1975.

Thanks

Are you absolutely certain it was between those dates?

Hi Carole

I am almost certain 98% ..he was baptised in Summertown  on 25/12/1904.  William Ernest Ewers.

His marriage shows he was living at no 29 South Parade, Summertown  in 1930.

His Grandparents  lived in this house from 1901 till the death of his grandmother in 1928. Susannah & Edward Ewers.

The house was then passed on to her son Hebert Edward Ewers until his death (also unable to find) but between 1929-1938.

I am sure the house was then passed to William Ernest and he is listed as living in the house to at least 1969.

I know that in 1975 there was another occupant of the house that has no connection to the Ewers.

I have searched for 'living relatives' but nothing.

ps.  Also during a house clearance sometime in the 1970's a family bible was found that I have been recently united with.  It was the bible of Williams great grandfather. Robert Harris b.1824 Charlton. It was Roberts daughter Susannah that lived at No.29 in 1901.

Susannah and Edward were my gr gr grandparents

Is that info from Electoral registers

That doesn't necessarily mean that he died - he could have sold the house and moved elsewhere - something smaller perhaps?

No not from electoral roles...Census 1901 to Kellys directories from 1907 to 1969.

I have searched electoral roles in the last few years and he is not showing.

I think the fact that when the house was cleared in the 1970's and the bible was found indicates that the occupant of the house had died?  Unfortunately the gentleman who cleared the house can not remember exact details, a friend of his who worked in St Edward school which was across the road had asked him to clear the house simply because he owned a van.  It was the son of this man who cleared the house who contacted me through Genes from a inscription in the bible.

It may be possible that William went into some care home???..he would be 103 years old now....

I have just confirmation that he was living there in 1972. Kellys Dir.

If he died post 1972 why does a death not show  Huh

I depends how long after 1972 he died.  He was only 68 at that time so could have lived into his late 70's or early 80's which could take you into the 1980's.  You have only looked to 1975 so it's a question of just trawling the index until you find him

All deaths had to be registered - no undertaker would bury anybody without a death cert

Ancestry deaths to 1983 are only a partially transcribed index.

Deaths from the 1920's onwards are very thin on the ground as transcriptions are by volunteers and priority is given to transcribing much earlier deaths

There is absolutely no point searching a cemetary - what if he was cremated??

Thats a valid point!

I am totally baffled by this!  Do you know where I could go from here?  If the death has not been transcribed yet and he did in fact die in Summertown..who would hold the details?

I can not seem to find it in ancestory or findmypast

Findmypast IS the full GRO index and if you have an Ancestry subscription then it is also available on there.

The full index is also available at your nearest main library

Thank you Carol

I think a visit to Oxford is forthcoming!

I have a 'feeling' that he died between 1972 and 1975.

I have sent a message to the son of the man who cleared the house to ask if he remembers anything more.... there is still the question as to why someone at St Edwards School asked him to clear the house? Did he buy the house? Was he a relative?

Its all very exciting? I suppose this is all whats its about...finding relatives easily is ok...but when you are challenged its far more interesting  Smiley dont u agree?

Thanks Carol..I will keep you posted

How about trying the Oxfordshire Heritage Search at the Oxfordshire County Council website?  I've found it very helpful in the past.  Don't know if their indexes cover the years that you are looking for but it's worth a try.
