Don't ignore the fact that the information in a Kelly's directory is often at least a year out of date. You can't really use it to prove that someone was still alive.
At the time you are talking about most of the information was taken from electoral registers which themselves were compiled from information gathered three months before they were published.
For example a 1972 directory may well be published at the end of 1971 from information in the 1971 electoral register for which the information was collected in October 1970.

Hello
There is a death for William Edward Ewers registered 1972 Dec quarter. Birth date is given as "about 1905".
As the person notifying did not know the exact date of birth, they might have got the second name wrong as well

Hi Barbara
After spending hours searching I also found this death about an hour ago!!! I think you may be right, the birth of about 1905 is close he was baptised 25 Dec 1904. The death in 1972 would tie in with the house clearance to.
I have ordered the certificate.
It would be great to find his address as 29 South Parade (if you have been following my search..thread WATTS YARD), I can then be certain that the bible stayed within the family. William was my nan Elsie Ewers cousin and it would be great to find some living relatives, so far this have proved fruitless but one thing at a time 
Thanks for your help and confirmation of what I was thinking.
