Cambs County Record Office to be closed from Feb 11th for refurbishment
« on: Friday 01 February 08 08:13 GMT (UK) »

Hi, Everyone,
Just thought I should let people know that the Cambs County Record Office at Shire Hall, Castle Hill, Cambridge is going to close for 4 weeks on February 11th for refurbishment, reopening on 11th March.
The Huntingdon Record Office Collection, which is currently based at Milton Rd. branch library, however, will still be open as normal.
With the main central library in Lion Yard still closed for major re-development, local researchers are going to be twiddling their thumbs for a while...

alas i planned to go there today but happened to find their press release on the cambridgeshire gov website (save a wasted trip!).

apparently they are having new carpets, a wall demolished and new furniture to make it more spacious, light and airy. sounds nice.

Andrew,
Glad that you didn't have a wasted journey - from how far I'm not sure, but there's nothing worse than turning up full of hope to find a Record Office firmly closed.
Can't wait for the CCRO to reopen in more salubrious surroundings - I read today too that Cambridge Central Library does not open again until "The Autumn"...

First visit for me today after their Refurb.  Must say it has a much better feel to it, with the one main, larger research room.  They're still very short of microfilm and fiche readers, but the staff as as excellent and obliging as ever.  Tuesday's always a busy day, the CCRO having been closed since the previous Friday, so to be on the safe side I usually phone up to make a booking now on that day...
