1851/1861 census look up
« on: Friday 29 February 08 09:38 GMT (UK) »

Ann Varney born Mentmore about 1815. 1851 census living Stowe, Bucks and married to Samuel Hickford (Heckford) born about 1803 Heath and Reach, Beds.  1861 census living Leighton Buzzard. A son born 1856 Leighton Buzzard bap All Saints 30.8.1857. There is a marriage for Ann Varney to Samuel Hickford, Varney spelt Vanney, but possibily the same person.

Would like if possible please information on census returns for 1851/61.

Thank you

Pam

Thanks for your reply.  The 1861 census is certainly the family I'm looking for. Don't think the 1851 is them, as Ann Heckford maiden name was Varney born Mentmore. Would you be so kind as to look for Samuel in 1871 census, I beleive Ann died1865 Bedford. Ann married Samuel 1835.

Hi Pam

Hello Pam

I also have Ann's death 1865, thanks.

Samuel is now in the workhouse 1871.  Wonder what happened to the children?

The George and Ann Varney 1841 census is of the same family, but that Ann was a 'Fowler' before marriage. Too many Ann's ,Sarah's, William's and George's in this family.

Thanks for your help

Carol

Hi Pam

Thank you so much, thats brilliant.  Would it be too much to ask for the names and address of where the children are? Any time, no rush.

Pam

Again, thanks for the census information. The 1871 census for Amy snd Sarah Hickford - yes.  1871 for Frederick age more or less right, but I took it a stage further on Family Search 1881 census, an Edward James Smith born Barking Essex is with his grandmother Elizabeth Melvin, then on free BDM a Jane Melvin married James Smith West Ham 1868. So I think that eliminates Jane being Jane Hickford.  Looking at some notes I took from Ancestry on Thursday it says Frederick Hickford went to USA 1871 so will have to explore that avenue.  Seeing just 48 hours ago I had no idea what had happened to Ann Varney, I think, with everyones help, I've achieved so much.

Thanks to you Pam and others that have contributed.

Best wishes

Carol
