The National Trust of Scotland invites young people who are under the age of eighteen, who have ancestors who fought on either side at the Battle of Culloden, to submit a family tree. Those who submit the best trees will be invited to the official opening of the new visitor centre near Inverness on Wednesday 16th April. Entries must be received before Wednesday 19th March. www.nts.org.uk/Culloden/Home

As far as I know none of my direct ancestors fought at Culloden (quite odd given that I live in the North East of Scotland).
The only connection I do have is David Lascelles, my greatx5 grand uncle. He was killed at Culloden aged 14 whilst serving as valet to Charles Fraser of Inverallochy. David came from a staunch Episcopalian family.
I'm 21 this year, so the competition is closed to me too. I don't have any cousins under 18 either (would that be cheating?).

My 5x Gt.Grandfather Alexander Grant survived Culloden with 2 of his brothers. I visited the battlefield for the first time last April on the anniversary...it's a very moving place. My youngest son will be 18 in September but he's not really interested in the family tree yet

What are the best sources for checking out those who were involved in the risings? I only know about David Lascelles because another ancestor wrote about him.

Click here for "Bloody Culloden" which was compiled and edited by John Macdonald.
It was first published in 1995 by the Inverness Courier

How are we doing here
Should Windsor87 knock a few years off his age, Elaine's son be persuaded to take an immediate interest in family history or should a tree drawn by jc's three year old grand daughter be submitted?

There's a lot of stuff in The National Archives in England about the Jacobite Rebellions in general, and a Research guide to them
www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=87
I have found a number of documents with lots and lots of lovely lists of names, that would make a fantastic indexing project. Here's a sample from just one page in TS20/80 Treasury Solicitor's prosecution papers 1745 (it's OK, moderator, I made sure it's only part of a page!)
Although I have some Inverness ancestry, I haven't so far been able to trace any line that far back (too many people, not enough names to go round between them. Anyone with Highland or Welsh ancestry will know exactly what I mean!).

I love the expression "not enough names to go round" ! I know exactly what you mean. Luckily for me an uncle did the research on the Scottish ancestors some years ago and I have been able to corroberate some of it and add a bit here and there but it isnt easy. Anyway, the list you had of prisoners from Inverness is fascinating!! Trouble is, I want it online, completely, and now! I'm off to Glasgow soon so perhaps can look up some sources there.
