Tracing Robert BROWNE and Ellen
« on: Saturday 01 March 08 00:46 UTC (UK) »

We are trying to find out anything at all about Robert BROWNE (or BROWN), a Gardiner (sic), age recorded as 32 or 33, and his wife Ellen (elenore ?) 23 who arrive in South Australia on the James Fernie 7 Nov 1854 from County Wicklow - according to the Passenger List.
We realize this is not much to go on, except Ellen's age limits the range of years, which would be limited anyway.

We have been helped before, by Mary (merryderry, Rootschat Veteran) in Mar 07 in finding a Marriage (in 1854) for ASTLEFORDs in County Carlow, which is the 2nd most likely place for the BROWNE Marriage, since we have reason to believe the 2 families were associated in Ireland.  see below

Anything at all you can provide would be most appreciated.

Fred - husband of Jeenie.

Civil registration in Ireland started after they left and to search for church records (if they still exist) you need to know where they lived (parish of not actual townland). Do their death certificates give any clues?

Unfortunately we can't find death for Ellen, and South Australian Death Certificates gave extremely little information in those days.  Robert's gives only date, name, age, occupation, address and cause.  We have tried all other avenues we can think of since 1992 to find more info.
We were just hoping, against hope, that they might have had eg a civil marriage - since Mary was able to find a marriage for the ASTLEFORDs in Carlow Town, County Carlow, 28 March 1854.   [We have been able to obtain the Marriage Certificate for John ASTLEFORD to Ellen LYNCH "Marriage solemnized at Registrars Office in the Town of Carlow in the Carlow District".]
But i'm afraid we have very little to go on for the BROWNEs (or BROWNs).  Cry  Practically nothing, in fact.
