Crundwell - death by accident
« on: Saturday 01 March 08 03:28 GMT (UK) »

Thomas Viner Crundwell, born in Tonbridge Wells UK in 1839 emigrated to NZ sometime after 1851 (he was on the UK 1851 census but not on the 1861). In 1872 he married Susannah Miskelly, who had arrived from Belfast in 1869 aboard the Caroline Coventry at Wellington. In 1873 he secured a hotel license and was proprietor of the Globe Hotel in Adelaide Road, Wellington, but only held this for a short time.  They had some daughters. In March 1878 he died aged 36 (a discrepancy here as he should be 39). He was described as a "dealer" on his  death certificate which also states "verdict of a jury - accidental death through the upsetting of a cart"

Questions - 1) On what ship and what date did Thomas arrive in New Zealand? (2) What was he doing in Gisborne and when did he go there? (3) What were the circumstances of his death?

Any help solving these queries would be much appreciated.

Theres not a local paper for that area online and searchable yet at Papers past, otherwise you may have found a report in the paper.
You could ask the Gisborne Library??maybe they have an index. (to see the investigation into his death)

1881 electoral roll there is
Electorate   Napier
Number   222
Surname   CRUNDWELL
Given Names   Thomas Viner
Nature Of Qualification   Residential
Place Of Residence   Napier

Hi again - thanks for that info - however as a 1966  research project I undertook with the political science department of Victoria University and Stokes Valley Jaycees proved, electoral rolls are notorious for still recoding the names of persons who have deceased or moved. Of 100 randomly slected names from the Petone Electoral Roll 39 were either deceased or no longer resided at the addresses shown on the roll. This is certainly the case with Thomas Viner Crundwell as he died on 9th March 1878. However it's likely that his wife Sussanah was still there with her children.

I had done a browse of the non searchable hawkes Bay papers to see if there was a reference to the death but came up with nil results. Incidentally, he was buriued at the Makaraka Cemetery but the records have him down as Cranwell.

Hi

You may like to try Archives NZ at Wellington - they hold filmed versions of many inquests.

Thanks for that - I have searched Archway without any luck so far.

Is there a contact or web site for this information?

Regards

Hi Don

From memory, Archives (Wellington) have an "inhouse" index of Inquests (sorry, not listed on Archway).

Would suggest an email to them to ascertain whether they hold the particular record you you are seeking.

Good luck.

Hello Althea, I have just looked up the death certificate information I have and he had been in NZ for 13 years at the time of his death which puts his arrival here at about 1865.

The informant was Harry Kenrick, Coroner, and dated 11th April 1878, a month after his death and the place of registration Turanga.

So I should now contact Archives NZ to find a copy of the coronors report.

Thanks again - also thanks Lucy - u2 have been most helpful
