Berkshire newspapers 1860's
« on: Sunday 02 March 08 10:23 GMT (UK) »

Hello

Does anyone know if any copies of Berkshire newspapers exist from the 1860's ( 1863 in particular )  ?  Did the Bray area have it's own newspaper ?
Hoping to find a death notice for Jan 1863 .

Thanks

The British Library's newspaper collection contains many Berkshire newspapers - check out their collection www.bl.uk/collections/newspapers.html

It looks like the Slough, Windsor and Eton Express is the most local while the Berkshire Chronicle and the Reading Mercury were the county papers. The Maidenhead Advertiser started in 1870 if your search goes that far.

But death notices were not commonplace at that time. I was looking through some 1855/6 Newbury papers last week, deaths notices were limited to relatively high status people and not necessarily locals.

The Chronicle and Mercury are available at Reading Library, Maidenhead Library may have the other. All are available at the BL Colindale, NW9.
