Newburychap,
It's good to know that a Baptisms Index is in preparation.
I've been doing FH long enough to know that it takes some time to look through parish registers, so I'm in no way complaining that the Archives assistants fail to find the information - that's the way it goes, and, of course, you have to pay for their time. It's just bloomin expensive! You can obviously get to Bucks and Berks ROs to use your camera - imagine how frustrated you'd be if your only option was to pay your £20+ and pick what you hope will be the right parish!!
By the way, your version of 'relations' between the Berks FHS and RO seem to be a bit different to other versions I've read about on RC?! I hope yours is the correct one, as a spirit of cooperation must surely be the best way forward.

Another example of good relations - and a membership benefit I forgot (not that it helps those unable to get to Reading). Last month the BRO opened for an evening for Berks FHS members only - it was successful enough for a couple more such evenings to be planned.
Of course the BRO do not let the FHS do everything they want but the relationship is pretty good. I cannot remember going into the BRO and not finding FHS volunteers with original registers on the table in front of them. Mainly working on PR transcripts or the Burial 'Index'.
Last month CDs of Little Wittenham and Bradfield PRs were released as well as the annual update of the Berkshire Burial Index (now over 500,000 entries, growing at around 50,000 a year). The next CD will be Reading, St Giles PRs (a huge job), hopefully in a week or two. There is plenty of transcribing going on - though it would always be good to get more done.

Berkshire Family History Society also have a very good magazine for members -Berkshire Family Historian. In the current issue there is a note from the Chairman about the current difficulties with the Oxford diocese regarding transcripts on the internet. This has led to the withdrawal of the Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire records from those transferred from FamilyHistoryOnline to Findmypast.
Apparently negotiations are continuing between county archivists and the diocesan lawyers.
