Hi Alison
As you know he was born in Coggeshall in Essex in 1822 the easiest way to try and find his parents would be to look at the baptismal records for the parish church in Coggeshall. By 1822 (from my experience) most baptismal records are fairly legible. At this time a baptismal record would record; date of baptism, name of infant, parents names (i.e. John & Mary Smith), where they lived (in this case it would just record Coggeshall) and father's occupation.
Also if you are lucky enough to find the baptism you can then usually follow the parents through the years and find any further children they had. In 1822 most people never moved far from their village so it maybe possible to find John Fenn's parents' marriage which gives you his mother's maiden name.
Are you able to easily visit the Essex Records Office? If not (I live in Chelmsford) I often visit to fascilitate my own research, so I could look at Coggeshall's for you.
Regards Deborah

Hi Alison
I will keep a note of your request and take it with me when I next visit the ERO. This may not be until April as I have an 81 year old mum downsizing and moving from Suffolk to Essex on 13th March, an 81 year old dad who is in residential care (Alzheimers) and three teenagers - so I'm a little busy at present!
I agree with you I've had some very helpful responses to my queries so it is nice to be of help to others.
Regards Deborah

Hi Alison
Sorry but I haven't forgotten you. My mum moves into her new property this coming Thursday (3rd April) so she will be settled - well apart from being surrounded by millions of boxes! So all being well I aim to visit the ERO sometime the following week (w/b 7the April). However, as it is the two week Easter break for us here in Essex from this coming Monday I may get down to the ERO before Thursday.
I'll print off the info you've posted and take it with me. Fingers crossed after your patient wait I come back with some info for you.
Regards Deborah
