Is there some sort of list available (parish list, or other) that tells why a person was in Stapleton? I gather it was a place of last resort for many people, but a few of my family members ended up there, all adults with occupations, so I'd like to find out what sent them there. I sent for one of the death certs but it wasn't clear if the final illness is what got her there or how long she was there. Thanks.

I doubt if there's any chance of finding out why somebody was in a particular workhouse and about the only reason for anybody being there would have been, "go there or starve". Before any lowly worker could travel to another Union's area to work, a certificate would be needed to confirm that in the event of him being destitute, his original Union would take him back and he would therefore not have been a burden to his new parish.
Not all workhouses were as bad as Dickens paints the one Oliver was in and you must remember that Dickens was a social reform activist trying to prick the conscience of Victorians.
The workhouse not far from where I live was a model much visited by people around the country and its inmates even brewed their own beer in one of its cellars, so the story goes!
If workhouses were the vogue today, I dare say all those in receipt of social security/unemployment benefits would be in them - wow!
Regards
Chas

Thanks, Chas.
I've read some of the descriptions and surely hope there was some sort of less-than-devastating life in there.
In the very few occasions of illness I've seen in other families on the tree, someone in the family took care of them.
This one very large nuclear family has an unusual incidence of inmates in workhouse and hospital and early death. It would be interesting and/or useful to know if there was a hereditary reason.
Thanks again for the link.- Talka

You should be able to find out more about why your ancestors were admitted to the workhouse, how long they stayed and other salient facts by looking at the board of Guardians minute book - if it has survived.
I am not sure about the status of Stapleton workhouse but I would suggest contacting Bristol record office in the first instance to see what records they have.
Meanwhile have a look here:

In my case, I found my rellies in receipt of "out relief" when times were hard. I have also seen the records of a young woman who came and went on several occasions, usually arriving just in time to give birth! Remember that hospital facilities were few and far between in the past.
kind regards, Arranroots
