Hi Frank,

Had a quick look in the local phone book, Emond isn't a common name here but I used to work with someone by that name and they were from Selkirk.

Local phone book has 10 -  4 Selkirk, 3 Galashiels, 1 Hawick, 1 Peebles and 1 Innerleithen. Selkirk, Galashiels and Hawick are very close to each other as are Peebles and Innerleithen.

Just an aside to previous e mail.

Hi Terry

Many thanks for a speedy response and those valuable tips. Was about to post on main notice board, with Roxburgh NEW TOPIC, as I've just read, this is the correct procedure.

From rootschat got to freecen and I've just been reading my great grandfather's (40 yr old, William Emonds) discharge papers from 1917. He was slightly more fortunate than others, on this very poignant remembrance day.

Kind Regards
Frank

Hi Frank,

Just remembered, it might be worth your while to visit the Borders Family History Society. They have a room at Old Gala House, Galashiels. It is manned by volunteers and is only open between April and October, check their web site for further information. I had a look and they do hold a copy of one 'tree' with the name Emond in it. You never know it might be your family Cheesy

Hi Terry

I have a copy of census 1841 through 1871 for Parish of Crailing, Roxburgh. I know this is were my ancestors came from, g.g.g.grandparents Elizabeth & William lived there. He was a tailor. Slight difference in age: 1851 census; Crailing William Emonds, 47 yrs old and Selkirk William Emonds, 49 yrs old. Cousins perhaps?

The biggest clue I have and probably the most valuable(personally) is a family Emonds bible. Couple of years past, my mother & father, who live in Linwood, near Paisley, Scotland, received an email from a lady in America saying she had a bible with the Emonds name. Any connection?

I could give her some names and dates (from GROS) that were unbelievably entered in the bible, she kindly donated the bible to myself and family. Bible originally belonged to Alexander Emonds (g.g.grandfather), son of William. There are births, deaths, marriages inscribed on the inner cover dating from 1814 to 1903 relating to Crailing and Glasgow. In fact all the  Emonds names that you researched are there.

Bible had been with my parents for sometime and was only returned to me last week, need to a bit more detective work.
Do you think that I should start a new thread EMONDS/CRAILING with this info and would the Heritage Hub be interested in details?

Kind Regards
Frank

Hi Frank,

Yes I think I would start a new thread with the info that you have.  The Heritage Hub is just the Scottish Borders Archive Centre. You can pay them to do look ups, it's all on the internet just google Heritage Hub Hawick. I don't think they would be interested in a family tree as such.

Borders Family History Society might be but again they charge for look ups. I can't remember how it works but I think you might get a half hour free.

I see Becky has found some Emonds in the 1851 census Selkirk, it may be that they are some of yours. If you reply to her on this thread she will get notification that you have replied and you could ask if she would give you the transcription for these Emonds.  Smiley  Smiley

What a treasure.. the family bible, you are so lucky  Shocked Smiley

Good luck

Thanks Terry, will do, info needs to be shared and this is a great place to do that Cool

Bible was found in a junk shop/bric a brac about 20 years ago , somewhere between Glasgow and Aberdeen according to Caroline's sister who bought it for her as a present. I think Glasgow, or would like to think that as that is were I was born, 1964.

She was an American touring the UK . Caroline was decluttering her home in Indiana, U.S.A. before moving to Australia last year and sent the bible back to Scotland, well near enough, Lincs.  Grin Wink

Hi Becky

Terry has mentioned that you kindly, might have some info for sharing Smiley on the EMONDS family 1851 Selkirk census. Wondered if they could be some of my ancestors?

Transcript sharing? What is the correct procedure, is it copying details to thread on this site from original documents or posting copies(jpeg's/TIFF) of the original. I've got Crailing census details on Emonds.

Kind Regards

Hi Beckey

I did get the census list, many thanks  Cheesy  Wink. Been trying to decipher who's who EMONDS, using some info I have, FREECEN, IGI and Scotland's people this past weekend. Once you get into it, minutes, hours, days, fly by.Managed to find out grt grt grt grandparents; William Emonds and Elizabeth Scott married Aug 1838, Saint Boswells, Roxburgh and grt grt grt grt grandparents; Thomas Emonds and Agnes Frazer married Nov 1811, Melrose, Roxburgh.

At the moment stuck at this particular Thomas Emonds, D.O.B./were born/his parents for the next link in the chain! There seems to be quite a few Thomas's either EMONDS or EMOND and living either in ROXBURGHSHIRE or SELKIRKSHIRE.

Have also just discovered Google My Maps, were you can enter all place names relevant to a project, add photos, enter text etc.
This is a good way of getting an idea of locations of ancestors, for personal use or sharing.

Can't thank you enough, and I'm sure I'll have plenty more queries  Grin

Hi Terry,

Thanks for your kind offer. I'm interested in TODD graves. According to the Borders FHS there should be 2 in  Stichill, and one each in Crailing and Oxnam. Any more details of these would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike.

Hi Mike,

It's the Borders FHS MI books that I have. there isn't a Todd in my edition for Oxnam so would assume it is a fairly recent gravestone.

Stichill

Erected by John Todd in loving memory of his wife Isabella Henderson who died at Runningburn 11.3.1903. Also the above John Todd who died at Sunlaws Lodge 13.12.1919
                             ........................

In sacred memory of Thomas Brotherston farmer Homebyres who died in the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh 5.4.1903 aged 54 years. Also John his son who died at Sucklawridge 29.7.1885 aged 2 years. Also Elizabeth Todd his wife who died at Homebyres 12.8.1918 aged 64 years

                            ..................................

Crailing

In loving memory of Peter Todd beloved husband of Elizabeth Mitchell died 17.2.1947 aged 62years also above Elizabeth Mitchell died 18.10.1987 aged 99 years.

There are Todd/Tod's in some of my Berwickshire books in places pretty close to Stichill or is it only these specific areas you are interested in. If you are interested you could give me some names and I'll have a look.

Thanks Terry for the very quick response.

Two of these are in my family tree and the third is in my records although I don't think there is a direct connection. I'm pretty much interested in all Todd's in Berwickshire and Roxburgh, but George and John Todd's are of particular interest as these names seem to pass down the line. I already have the MIs for Eccles.

So if you have the time and inclination then feel free to post more!

Thanks again,

Mike.
