Hello Terry, I am new to this and I was wondering if MI means inscriptions on tombstones?  If so
could you do some for me? They lived in
Galasheils. But I can't seem to find when they
died or where they are buried.
Thanks in advance, Gala Girl

Hi Gala Girl,

Yes MI (Monumental Inscription) is inscription on gravestone. I'm sorry I don't have any Mi's for the Galashiels area. I would put your query up on the Selkirkshire board which is the area that Galashiels is in.

Sorry I couldn't help.

Terry,
hi, I'm interested in any MIs with the name of LECK : LECH : LAKE : LAIK or LEAK.  The family wandered about Roxburgh a bit but were last known in Crailing.
There is also a MIDLEMAS : MIDDLEMAS : MIDDLEMIST : MIDDLEMAST &c link and I'd be grateful if you could include that name too.

I have a copy of the Sprouston & Lempitlaw MIs if I can look anything up for you.

thank you for your time and trouble  Smiley

I did a 'tree' for my friend on her 50th birthday and Middlemost/mist etc came into it and they were in the Crailing/Jedburgh area. Didn't have a lot on them but her 4g grandparents were John Middlemist and Isabella Scott,  3g's Andrew Middlemist and Christina Boag then she started to come down a female line so middlemist etc was lost.  Any of these names in your family.

If you don't mind you could give me the transcription in Sprouston for William Hastie and wife Margaret Cowe. My 2g grandparents. I keep meaning to go back, I wrote down the MI and then lost it, so you would save me a visit.

Many thanks

Hi Terry

Have just returned from a first visit, 4 day trip, with my father to the borders, stayed in a wonderful B&B, Crailing Old School which is right next door to Crailing Kirk, were we found the headstone you mentioned in a previous post. My grt grt grt grandparents and family rest in such a beautiful spot. Details below

Erected to the memory of ELIZABETH SCOTT wife of WILLIAM EMONDS Crailing died 6.2.1862 aged 47 years also ADAM their son who died 16.5.1866 aged 15 YEARS also ROBERT his son who died 27.7.1872 aged 61/2 years THOMAS their son who died 14.10.1875 aged 34 years also JOHN their son who died 24.11.1876 aged 32 years also above WILLIAM EMONDS who died 22.3.1886 aged 72 years.

On the reverse of the same headstone: In memory of ALEXANDER EMONDS who died 23.11.1880 aged 33 years also FANNY HAMILTON his wife who died 26.7.1879 aged 30 years also ELIZABETH their daughter who died 1.5.1880 aged 16 months.

My grt grt grandparents, ALEXANDER & FANNY, both died in Glasgow, ELIZABETH their daughter Crailing and the only survivor, their son, my great granda WILLIAM EMONDS, aged 4 from the 1881 Crailing census, was living with his grandparents  WILLIAM and MARGARET EMONDS (maiden name: HALL), 2nd wife, remarried 1864 and she died 28.7.1903 aged 79 & 1/2 years.

Went to churches they were married at and bands held (St Boswells & Smailholm) ,church their parents were married at (Melrose).

WILLIAM EMONDS above was born in Earlston, went there too.

Have discovered a ROBERT EMONDS married to MARGARET MERCER & m.i. for Earlston has them as EDMONDS, census as EMONDS.

I think this is my grt X3 grandfather's brother? I can't seem to trace their marriage to see if ROBERT EMONDS of EARLSTON parents are same as WILLIAMS: grt X4 THOMAS EMONDS & AGNES FRAZER.

Went to Hawick Heritage Hub, Borders Family History Society in Galashiels, but forgot to look up m.i. for MARGARET HALL/EMONDS in the parish of Crailing or there abouts. Do you have any record of her?

Wonderful, sentimental and informative time had tracing the footsteps of my ancestors.

Regards
Frank Emonds Grin

Hi Frank

Sorry don't have anything for Margaret Hall/Emonds. If you have the MI for Robert in Earlston and he died after 1855 you will be able to purchase a copy of his death cert from Scotlandspeople for £1.20 that will give you his parents.

Glad to hear you had such a good time following your ancestors footsteps. You were visiting my stomping ground, I live in Earlston Smiley

Hope you're lucky with Robert Smiley

Best wishes

Thanks for the Middlemass &c clan, Terry.  i'd no idea you'd find so many.  I'd hoped by adding the Middle... name you'd maybe identify the Leck family more easily.  This is fantastic.  Obviously a popular name in the borders  Smiley

here's your inscription:
no.261 Sprouston cem.
Er. by WILLIAM HASTIE imo his dear wife MARGARET DOWNIE COWE w d at Lempitlaw 19.11.1902 aged 51yrs.  Also the above WILLIAM HASTIE w d at Ormiston Mill 23.2.1927 aged 79yrs.  Also their dau HELEN COWE HASTIE w d 29.11.1945 aged 73yrs

there are 3 more Hastie inscriptions - on different stones.  The include a
JANE ORMISTON HASTIE & her sp GEORGE TELFER
JAMES HASTIE BRYDON  & relatives
JOHN HASTIE HOWIE w d in Australia - whole pile of folk on his stone

Let me know if any of these are of interest.

My Thomas LECK, married Margaret MIDDLEMAST [sic] 6 Dec 1795 Crailing ROX and then wandered about all over the county bearing a new kid each time the put their feet up, but they seemed to return to Crailing in between times. Every 2nd or 3rd kid is born there. My direct forebear, their dau Janet was one of those, then married James DAVIDSON and went to his part of the world, Lempitlaw nr Sprouston.  I'd hoped that maybe Janet's parent's had maybe settled there since they seemed to return over and again!   Maybe i'll find them in Morebattle or Jedburgh.. or even Linton where they also stopped off.   My family members were for ever dropping off the planet!

Thank you for all the work, I appreciate it.  I may well find my Margaret is related to one of them, once i find out who mum & dad are Smiley

Hi Terry

Beautiful part of the country you live in, my dad couldn't get over how every little village and larger towns were so clean and well kept.  Smiley

Robert EMONDS/EDMONDS of EARLSTON died 1903 at the grand old age of 91, so I'll look at Scotlandspeople. Thanks  Wink
